No one would have believed, in the first years of the twenty-first century, that human affairs were being watched from timeless worlds beyond space. No-one could have dreamed that we were being scrutinized, as someone with a microscope studies creatures that swarm and multiply in a drop of wster. Few men even considered the possibility of worlds beyond our own. And yet, across the gulf of space, beings immeasurably superior to us regarded this world with equine eyes; and slowly, and surely, they free their plans against us.
