@techdisk42 As for "since when", since a few years ago when AMD bought ATI and started opening up all of the hardware documentation so that said free driver has able to very quickly leap ahead in quality, far surpassing anything nvidia's ever done. I'm currently using a Radeon HD6570 with the free driver and everything works fine. Had to install S3TC to make some stuff work but after that, all is well. Minecraft on max settings, Amnesia, Bastion, etc. And I'd guess the heat is due to your system doing software rendering which is probably taxing your cpu very hard.
