With international affairs, America is depicted as a "police man" who tries to monitor everything, which it does. The U.S.S.R. had a tight grip on dealings in the Middle East. The fall of the U.S.S.R. meant the fall of one nuclear power, which then led way to a bunch of littler nuclear capable countries.
