@nerthos yup. it's been foreshadowed pretty regularly since S1 imo. Tara Strong also indicated that a feature for the show is very likely, which will probably be the canonical end. My prediction is that the conflict in the feature will be friends in Ponyville vs. destined royal duty to be Princess Twilight Sparkle. I predict the ending will…no, I won't spoil that for you :3
