  1. @thelastgherkin Tips on shading. Well, assuming Photoshop, create a layer of solid fill colours, another layer or two above that, either shading or Light and Dark. Use the solid fills to select areas, or save area selections as Alpha channels, use the airbrush on the shading/light/dark layers to paint highlights and shadows. Keeping the fill colour layer separate allows reselecting the work area easier, and also lets you easily flip between overlay effects with the other layers, multiply, partial transarency, etc. Oh, and to figure where the highlights and shadows go, pick an imaginary light source and envision lines emanating from it. Close surfaces are highlights, ones on the other side of the mass are dark. Or, simply assuming if it's on top it's lighter, below is darker, and line thickness helps to be thicker on the underneath of things too.
