@nerthos There are LOTS of sayings/proverbs that make sense in all culture that make loads of sense in other cultures. There are exceptions though, such as "Selling while HE is present" is just confusing untill you know about the entire story of ( incredibly shortened ) a thief that managed to steal wares from people who just purchased said wares, and sold them back to the shop/marketstall owner for 50% salesprice, this way the shop/marketstall never ran out of product. This thief was as good at stealing as he was vain and as such became well known for as the best thief alive with everyone knowing what he looked like ( whoops, that is like a bad thing, right, maybe a plothole in this childrens story ). As such if you managed to sell something to anyone when people knew HE was there, you were a REALLY crafty smartypants.
