@question Der deutsche Name Schmetterling reicht bis ins 16. Jahrhundert zurück. Damals hatte man wohl beobachtet, dass Falter im Melkeimer ertrunken sind. Man ging davon aus, dass die Tiere Milch stehlen wollten. Daraus ergaben sich Bezeichnungen wie Molkedieb und Schmantdieb oder Schmantling, schließlich Schmetling. Die Zwischensilbe -ter- wurde erst zu Beginn des 19. Jahrhunderts eingefügt. Das so entstandene Wort Schmetterling lässt sich nun zwar gut aussprechen, sagt aber eigentlich nichts mehr auf seinen Ursprung.
In diesem Zusammenhang ist auch das englische Wort #Butterfly zu sehen.
