  19. I could post on the fediverse all night long. :( I have to sleep eventually though.

I wish I could get my friends to abandon # and # and instead use federated services. Although it's a disingenuous comparison, I think GNUSocial provides a solid microblogging alternative to Twitter.

I also think that # could someday be used as a full-blown Facebook alternative, but Facebook is a kitchen sink with numerous features that is hard for individuals to fully replicate, or even desire to replicate. Even then, creating a 1:1 approximation of something is not reason alone for people to switch.

  22. @tuttle Last weekend I was ready to stay home instead of going to a "fix/remake" workshop (me representing !umehack) because they hadn't setup _any_ communication outside of walled gardens (apart from collecting emails).

I had told them they should get just an ordinary website. It didn't happen until I explained that only supporting walled gardens directly oppose a hacker ideology, diminishing my motivation to help. Also their mails had "Sent from my iPhone" advertisement, despite Apple's infamous environmental disservices (not ideal for the workshop!). I had to ask them several times to remove it before they did so.

I think it's important to show those who want help from the !foss community that what we do is in fact important and that centralisation of the internet is bad for _all of us_.

Our common struggle is in fact so important that we _should
_ say no to "bad deals". If we don't say no to #, #, # etc. it's effectively the same as saying _yes_ to them.

  30. Well ok, maybe the # one requires javascript to load all the way there even (I don't know, I don't use it). But at least when SO CALLED FRIENDS (those who get used by Facebook) run on a bad internet connection, like with #, they often get that center-column-image-thing and I spend all of the 1.23 seconds of its screentime in mental agony. Then I continue that day in more mental agony because I had to witness Facebook using someone.
