a big Thank You for all the people in the Federation especially those who made, contributed to, or helped someone in any way with Redmatrix, Hubzilla, Friendica, Diaspora, Pump.io, GNUsocial and all involved with anything that shares the visions of open federation and user freedom
and to all the users too - for spreading the word and giving it a go and helping the networks grow!

I find !GNUsocial successful because it works for me. Having tech-oriented conversations actually makes GNUsocial more successful for me than #Twitter -- compare the hashtag #LaTeX on the two services and see the difference. And there are plenty of non-tech topics on other GNUsocial instances, see http://rainbowdash.net/ for example. Also, I don't see GNUsocial being any more complicated to use than Twitter. Using the WebUI on GNUsocial insulates the average user from the technical specifications of #Federation. True, people running their own instance need a bit more technical know-how. But at the GNUsocial demo at the #Linux conference yesterday someone said that the Federation and scalability was nice, but she was *really* impressed that a full microblogging site could be set up in half an hour. GNUsocial is different from Twitter, and so its success is measured differently too.

@heluecht How was the #federation on #32c3? Did people (or robots) do anything constructive?
I noticed a lack of mentioning of !gnusocial, but I guess I should blame myself for not attending and being annoying about it :] -
My talk at the #32C3 #FSFE assembly -- "Bringing free-as-in-freedom to social networks: what, why, and how" -- is tomorrow, Dev 28th at 20:00 in Hall 13. Come one come all!

@deavmi OIC. #Wikipedia does not tell whether #mxit uses/used !XMPP. Without #federation, all smaller and regionalized services are likely to collapse as the big guys expand into their areas. (Not saying Mxit didn't federate; I never heard of them before, so I have no idea.)
-
@commonify great :)) One thing to remember is: The whole network is called the !gnusocial #federation, and Quitter.se is 1 of its instances

@hgfernan no, sadly federation of groups is only partially implemented. Like I said before, #federation has not even been really *designed*, There are a few hacks that partially work, that is all. The first priority should be proper DESIGN of federation. !fediverse !fediverso

@tobias when I looked at his profile there was a dent from three hours earlier that did not appear in my timeline... I really wish #federation were a bit more #robust across nodes of different types and versions.

user stories (1) for Social #API by Evan. And the ensuing discussion: RT @f-a "that those 'stories' are just social #silo interactions and that we need to bake #federation as a primary feature. Evan disagrees, says that federation should be added on top of that and not as a primary feature" cc !consensus !irc (1) https://lists.w3.org/Archives/Public/public-socialweb/2015Feb/0018.html

"Why should #federation grow at all?" well, we see that it's not so much growing. For me: it's about meeting like-minded people. E.g. it was a great pleasure to see and talk with @lohang while he set up his instance. Believe me, if I wanted: I'd be running the biggest instances in the !fediverse. And not only the biggest, probably the top10 biggest. But I invest my time not in that, I like to educate them more

#federation: think about what made you join us. perhaps that could also motivate others? see also (1), (2) and (3). (1) http://skilledtests.com/wiki/Federation (2) http://www.skilledtests.com/wiki/List_of_Federated_Communication_Platforms (3) http://federation.skilledtests.com

@simsa0 perhaps we could include @moshpirit's excellent inkscape drawing on #federation (draft: http://qttr.at/har )

#federation, for those who want to look at the whole ( not only at !gs !gnusocial ) http://federation.skilledtests.com cc !consensus

RT @mariqueerta This !GNUsocial #federation is like #libertarian municipalism cc !gs
-
Thanks for explaining #federation of folks @who never sleep .

the !fediverse group description says: "the federated universe: all social media instances and their members that can directly talk to each other via #federation protocols" cc @mcnalu

@hosh I think #HierarchicalTree, #federation, #free, #you-can-selfhost, #you-like-the-people are ALL advantages.

guessing: for the #bot rules the world is a bad #bot again this month 2 #federation got borked 1

Appears #quitter.se is currently down. At this time, I’d like to remind everyone that dispersing among hundreds or thousands of instances will make #theFederation less vulnerable to downtime when any particular instance has trouble. #federation
