  1. a big Thank You for all the people in the Federation especially those who made, contributed to, or helped someone in any way with Redmatrix, Hubzilla, Friendica, Diaspora, Pump.io, GNUsocial and all involved with anything that shares the visions of open federation and user freedom

and to all the users too - for spreading the word and giving it a go and helping the networks grow!

  2. I find !GNUsocial successful because it works for me. Having tech-oriented conversations actually makes GNUsocial more successful for me than #Twitter -- compare the hashtag #LaTeX on the two services and see the difference. And there are plenty of non-tech topics on other GNUsocial instances, see http://rainbowdash.net/ for example. Also, I don't see GNUsocial being any more complicated to use than Twitter. Using the WebUI on GNUsocial insulates the average user from the technical specifications of #Federation. True, people running their own instance need a bit more technical know-how. But at the GNUsocial demo at the #Linux conference yesterday someone said that the Federation and scalability was nice, but she was *really* impressed that a full microblogging site could be set up in half an hour. GNUsocial is different from Twitter, and so its success is measured differently too.

I noticed a lack of mentioning of !gnusocial, but I guess I should blame myself for not attending and being annoying about it :]

  8. @deavmi OIC. # does not tell whether # uses/used !XMPP. Without #, all smaller and regionalized services are likely to collapse as the big guys expand into their areas. (Not saying Mxit didn't federate; I never heard of them before, so I have no idea.)

  12. @hgfernan no, sadly federation of groups is only partially implemented. Like I said before, # has not even been really *designed*, There are a few hacks that partially work, that is all. The first priority should be proper DESIGN of federation. !fediverse !fediverso

  15. "Why should # grow at all?" well, we see that it's not so much growing. For me: it's about meeting like-minded people. E.g. it was a great pleasure to see and talk with @lohang while he set up his instance. Believe me, if I wanted: I'd be running the biggest instances in the !fediverse. And not only the biggest, probably the top10 biggest. But I invest my time not in that, I like to educate them more
