Don't get me wrong, I still dislike the whole NSA thing, but it seems a lot of the complaints about them stem from slippery-slope logical fallacies and/or narcissistic presumptions that human eyes are going to read over your Google searches for pornography and put them on your record or something.

@redenchilada Pfft, human eyes cannot withstand reading over my Google searches for pornography!

@redenchilada The argument is that personal privacy is being infringed, regardless of the purpose. A lot of people feel that is wrong, including myself. How much safer does it really make us, overall, to have every single phone call, Skype convo, message board post, and instant message recorded for easy reference based on the person's name/aliases? Everyone. All the time. Since like 1997 or something.
-
@clayinthecarpet Then, there are those who remind us that "privacy" really only existed for about less than a percent of the time that humanity has and every generation before privacy was a thing did just fine. Then again, that somewhat assumes that privacy isn't a step forward and something we should preserve. I mean, we made it all the way to penicillin without penicillin but I sure as hell want to keep it! #ihavenoideawhereimgoingwiththis

@clayinthecarpet I get that complaint. It's totally valid. I mean, that kind of information might help in some court case some day, but it doesn't quite justify the possibility of abuse. All I'm saying is that worrying about it because it's going to bring 1984 into reality or something like that (like some people do) is worrying about it for the wrong reasons.
-
@redenchilada I don't think it's the wrong reason to worry at all. Big Brother IS watching you, and everything you say and do. You have to watch your words because they record all and can access your info for any reason they deem "appropriate." That's really scary and has potential for more than national security. ALL of your information is stored on a database. Every search you've made, everything you've typed online. For what purpose? "Just in case?" That's not good enough for me to willingly relinquish my rights to personal privacy as a citizen in this country.
-
@clayinthecarpet Oh know now they know my fetishes :c
-
@theyurityphoon Ross, we all know your fetishes ;)
-
@extremedash That's true, but what if the government decides to persecute me for them‽
-
@theyurityphoon Truth.
-
@clayinthecarpet Then it seems to me that the issue, and what should be addressed, is what is deemed appropriate reason to search that kind of information, instead of just the collection of the information. I dunno. I feel like the issue with the NSA is more due to the government running it than the actual thing itself.
-
@clayinthecarpet I was trying my hardest to be sarcastic. I forgot my sartalics again.
-
@snowcone Wow. You didn't know that? Read up on Edward Snowden sometime and the stuff he shared.
-
@snowcone they listen in to all phone calls so...... they could be
-
@redenchilada Yeah. I think I agree with ya on that. Blindly collecting all info on everyone is not the answer. If probable and warranted search and info-mining is considered appropriate, then why not. But everyone simply for the sake of mining info on all people, citizen or otherwise? kiwi that.
-
@clayinthecarpet Ah, Snowden. I don't think it was right to revoke his passport, but to be fair he did pretty much spark the entire paranoia movement regarding the NSA.
-
@snowcone Then you don't recall the facts. Every text you've ever sent for the past few years, every instant message you've sent, everything you've posted here...and abroad...is stored on databases and categorized.
-
@mrmattimation It's a decently-placed paranoia, if I may say so.
-
@clayinthecarpet Ignorance is bliss.
-
@mrmattimation more wubs
-
@mrmattimation It used to be.
-
@clayinthecarpet I get you on that. The thing is that a lot of times, the most useful information will sometimes come before whatever incident someone may be suspected in or w/e. So I guess the solution there would be to leave it to the sites to keep private record of communications (including deleted stuff) and just provide it on proper government requests (like what currently happens), but then the issue becomes that sites are privately-owned and can't be counted on for that.
