  1. Season 1 Episodes that make clear references to romantic/sexual 'love' beyond friendship: 3/26. (The Ticket Master, Green is Not Your Color, Best Night Ever) || Season 2 Episodes that make clear references to romantic/sexual 'love' beyond friendship: 9/26. (Cutie Pox, Secret of my Excess, Hearth's Warming, Baby Cakes, Hearts and Hooves Day, A Friend in Deed, Putting Your Hoof Down, and A Canterlot Wedding Parts 1 and 2. .) If you include the topic of family relations as opposed to friendship, you can get a much bigger difference between the seasons. In one hoof, it seems like they wanted to hint at the season ending like they did Season 1's gala. In the other, it seems like they're trying to branch out and explain that friendship is not all there is to relationships, but it is merely one kind of relationship that breeds many...

    • @alargesmallhorse Objectively speaking, Season 2 had better animation and detail-work than Season 1 did. (Intro reworked, distinct magic-colors per character. Variety in pony body builds increased, since they had the old ones available to reuse.) || Subjectively, I believe Season 1 makes a better humor series, and Season 2 makes a better exploratory series.

    • @retl I think season 2 looked better overall, but season 1 had the authenticity. it felt more like a little girl's show as opposed to a boys one or whatever we've made it. I used to believe season 1 had better writing, but upon further review, they're both pretty even there. I think the reason S2 looked so much better was purely because budget was increased so much. I believe they're both good and I can't really pick a favorite or anything, but they each have their redeeming factors.

  2. Another way of reading it is that they want to play up the romance angle of the series. Just follow the line of logic: Friendships-> build up into courting relationships-> which become the romantic relationships-> that lead into families-> Offspring have to learn lessons of friendships from the beginning.

                              • There are things I like about the show, and things I don't like about the show. Season one has some technical errors (Most of which I can't even see until someone else points it out.) and arguably didn't get to develop characters as much as they did in Season 2. Depth is nice, but I found almost all of the lessened emphasis on personal flaws and ponies being jerks to be part of a nicer, friendlier world I enjoyed escaping into. It was light, kind, and really only ever made glancing references to darker sides of life (Often buried in pretense of song). Season 2 has made character flaws that were only barely hinted at in Season 1 entire foci of multiple episodes. Pinkie's been disconnected before, but never seemed to be intentionally making others miserable or being more ignorant of the feelings of others than a brick wall ( Luna Eclipsed) and Twilight was more a socially awkward snarker than a pony trapped in logic loops (Lesson Zero, It's About Time). I'm not sure I want these ponies.

                              • So if I'm finding I need to dig for the exceptional good in fanart, and dig for the exceptional fun in the official work, why should I keep drowning myself in pony daily? I think I've developed some unhealthy habits now, in any case. And I'm going to change. Even if I don't know what yet.

Wednesday, 28-Mar-12 13:15:03 UTC from MuSTArDroid
                              • In particular, as a pony roleplayer, a lot of the more direct references to injury (It's About Time), alcohol (Sweet and Elite), and Death (Hearts And Hooves, Secret of My Excess) is a convenient lead in for a lot of themes I was using ponies to escape from in the first place. But I can't do anything against these topics in RP now, it's canon for the ponyverse! Sooner rather than later, I'll probably drop ponyRP. || However, it influences general fanart as well. There was already some skew towards exploring darker themes and saucier themes in fanart, as the motivation for it was often ,"What if...?" Or "If this weren't limited by the rating, this would happen!" That's fine, but with more canon elements being darker, fanwork gets even heavier and more violent still, as if to comphensate. Now, I often find myself unwilling to try a new artist's comic, or to view the new fan animation, or to read the new fanfic. After all, the last 5 were unhappy/violent. Why would this one be different?
