@bigpony I think EWBAITE did grow on me a fair bit after listening to it a few times, but that was also to my standard of "modern Weezer" at the time it came out. The White Album has so far held itself up much closer to the level of their early work in terms of its sound and songwriting strength, and that's really great. It feels good to be genuinely looking forward to a new Weezer album because in spite of all the times I've felt pretty disappointed by them I'll always have a huge soft spot for them.

@northernnarwhal I thought EWBAITE tried too hard to sound like a lot of their earlier stuff and ended up coming off kind of bland. There are a couple songs I do like a lot on there, but I felt it was weak overall. I've always liked everything they've released because Weezer is, in large part, a product of their evolving status and the musical trends and EWBAITE felt like they were tying to stop that so it felt insincere. The White Album songs feel like they're stopping in a more ambiguous spot in terms of subject matter and diversifying sound-wise so I look forward to it. The thing with the colored albums is that they're each very distinctive in their sound so I just hope they capture that again.

@bigpony All the coloured albums have definitely marked really specific points in their career, and I imagine The White Album will in turn have a pretty distinct sound (reflective of their past material's pop sensibilities but in a modern context). I guess EWAITE ended up growing on me so much because I hold those first 2 Weezer albums really near and dear and while I haven't hated every post 90s release they've had I feel that EWAITE was a sort of "return to form" that reminded me why I love the band in the first place. Admittedly the album didn't tread much of any new ground but I feel like these past few years Weezer have been trying to get genuinely serious about their music again while maintaining its lovably awkward charm and that's got me really excited. The White Album feels like a reconciliation of their career up until this point, and if the singles we've heard so far are indicative of how the rest of the record will sound I think it'll be really good.
