  1. 7 hours into my 32th birthday I've already caused all sorts of romantic chaos, had my crush hint very overtly that she would like me to fight with her boyfriend over her (won't, she made her choice) and had a drunk gay friend confess to me in an absolutely obsessive, self-destructive and pathological way (which would have been really hot if it was a girl)

It's turning out to be a VERY eventful day and I'm very happy for it.

I joined this place when I was 18 and I'm glad I haven't mellowed out at all in that time. Here's hoping in another 14 years things will be just as crazy still.

  2. Well I'm trying to do a House-aligned playthrough of Fallout: New Vegas, but I very really truly hate him and the terrible asshole things he says :-/

    • @scribus Interesting, he's my favourite faction to side with on the grounds of pragmatism, he's the only one with a plan (and the actual capability to make it happen) to make humanity go anywhere other than "we'll just be hobos in perpetuity"

He might not be incredibly likable, but in a survival scenario that's irrelevant.

    • @nerthos Yeah, I want to not hate him - I mean, a retro-future spaceVegas? Hell, yeah!! He's not even that unlikable, there's a wry sort of amusement to his bearing. But he's too egocentric; he's not preserving humanity, he's feeding his ego and seeking to create a thrallhood underclass to prop HIM up. Ultimately, I don't consider him sufficiently distinct from Caesar. Both cling to old-world ideals and play up some fantasy of the "inevitability" of "their" power. So, I kill him, take his city, and in my mind carry on with developing the space plans in a little more cooperative, ground-up fashion. (Though in all honesty a spacefaring future would be just as hellish as the vaults so iunno w/e i guess lol) Also I make The King governor or something :p

    • @scribus That all sounds good until you factor in the kind of human resource you're dealing with in Fallout. Ironically the tv show is the best illustration of this, with the main character trying to behave like a civilized person and consistently getting banana'd by everyone.

House's narcissistic approach is a necessity in the world he's operating, without the army of robots forcing the wastelanders to work at gunpoint nothing will get done (example: they're still living in shacks near 200 years after the war)
Plus, he has civilized some factions already, so it's not like he won't uplift the competent and decent wastelanders into better positions. He has to do that for any space settling plan to work, since good people are needed to populate those colonies.

Sometimes, a competent megalomaniac is the only option that can get the job done.

  4. Anyone claiming a smartphone or tablet can replace a regular computer is a delusional fool who has not tasted the power and freedom that a computer offers. I tried catching up on my tablet and it made me realize once again how limiting and cumbersome touchscreens are and how android is not making it easy navigating anything and its ecology is not geared to power users. Autocorrect and predictive text blocks are mere crutches and poor imitations of the feats one can do when mastering touch typing on a physical keyboard. I coould learn doing that on a screen keyboard but doing so blindly is verging on the impossible.

  5. Gonna assemble myself a first-aid box. I have the feeling that all the ready-to-go purchasable ones are lacking in material and actually useful bandages. Also the ones with any number of pieces in the title are even more scummy as they count every single safety pin and other useless small piece. I want middle to big band-aids. Furthermore I don't need a hard plastic case or yet another nylon zip bag. For my car I need one of those ready-to-go ones that are mandated but that is a different thing.

But RageNineteen was 28 years old and dating a 16 year old who he’d met when she was 15 while dating her friend who was also 15, and that’s just supposedly normal in the YouTube world?? The hell’s going on????

        • so maybe a weird question, but is there a term for people who... kind of don't care about their gender identity? like, not gender neutral. i've always been comfortable being a man, and I still am, but as i get older my gender (and to a certain extent my sexual orientation, though my tastes are still pretty geared towards feminine-looking people - but not necessarily exclusively women) is something that matters to me less and less, to the point where, if I weren't so obviously male, i could see myself being pretty tolerant of just about any pronoun anyone wants to call me. gender agnostic?

        • I know that they're pulling an episode of Community for implied blackface, and without even reading into it I know the exact scene they're talking about and I sincerely do not believe that a single person with any stake in societal progression watched that scene and thought it was actually a problem

Monday, 29-Jun-20 10:45:08 UTC from web
          • @tiff Similarly, I’m pretty sure pulling an episode of Golden Girls is not especially high on BlackLivesMatters’ priority list.

          • @mrmattimation I dunno how far exactly I'd go to defend these sorts of jokes but pretty much every example I can think of is pretty obviously a subversive criticism *of* blackface. Obviously I am not the person who can/should decide if that makes it more okay, but I feel like removing these scenes is stifling discussions of anti-racism if anything. Like just put the disclaimer in front like WB and Disney or whatever

          • @mrmattimation I would prefer it for future reference if POC actors got to voice POC characters, especially in the current industry where they aren't getting the same treatment or opportunities as white people; but I absolutely agree that this current wave of networks removing TV episodes with instances of racism and actors conveniently regretting voicing POC roles all of a sudden is largely posturing in the absence of actual willingness to, you know, hire and support and pay POC. I also don't think it's a particularly far reach to suggest that companies are just pretending this is what activists are asking for as some sort of psyop, since it will most likely push the needle back in their favour (i.e. still not hiring, supporting and paying POC)

        • Does anyone else find it particularly gross when for-profit corporations send messages about donating to charities or supporting a particular political opinion that doesn't have to do with their main business? It makes sense on the hiring end of course, and I get that companies are made of humans, but doing it on the public end just feels like capitalizing on people's emotions. The realty group holding my apartment made a donation to a campaign related to the protests. Why not give that money back to your leasers, or even your employees instead? They can then choose to do what they want with it.

I’m truly, truly sorry to anyone I offended with that kinda BS
