going on two and a half months without seeing my stalker, just kinda waiting for her to show up

@zeldatra Good gun, a bit expensive for carry if you don't use it often though. I'm a beretta 9mm guy, always found them nice, they were the standard cop gun here for decades.
-
@nerthos I don’t actually carry one, I was being a bit tongue in cheek when I said I needed one for defense, I learned how to use one and it’s what I use when I go to the range but the main reason I did it was for a private security job that would’ve provided one for me. Didn’t end up applying for the job though so it’s just one of those things I know how to do now with no real practical applications for the moment.

@scribus It's a waste to become immensely rich and not bananapost the world order. In his place, I would have gone through with ceasing satellite operations and responded to any further messages from the ambassador with "lmao" and a version of "friendship ended with mudasir" edited to pictures of zelensky and putin

Theoretically the work rules and environment at highschools nowadays is downright nightmarish, but since in practice what you can and can't do comes down to how you frame it and how good you are at talking your way through the hierarchy, it's not stressful at all for me and so long as I get results the administration doesn't get in the way.
I do often see other teachers that aren't good at the workplace politics losing hair and sleep over it though.Monday, 10-Oct-22 19:11:36 UTC from web-
@nerthos Ha, "other teachers" / "the District" has been one of the biggest stumbling blocks in my deciding to actually goto school and get teacher-certified up, I do not politick worth a crap
-
@scribus For me "other teachers" hasn't been too big a hurdle, because even though some are antagonistic (particularly the ideologues) they also tend to be massive cowards, so my usual strategy of just talking with full honesty to whoever's in charge is not something they know how to deal with.
The district and the ministry are another issue altogether, they seem to be on some sort of one-sided competition to prove the limits of insanity and incompetence when it comes to regulations and counterproductive ideas can yet be pushed further. The latest great ideas they had was a proposal to remove the attendance requirements so that students can't fail a class by not attending; and to demand tech schools be more lax with dress code (the dress code for tech school is just no hats, no piercings or jewelry in the workshop, pants without holes and knee-length blue or white overall/duster, all of which are basic safety requirements in a workshop)

I-66 coming out of Washington had a bunch of construction being done on it tonight which meant I couldn’t get into any of the exits leading home. The result is that I had to drive through the dying rural part of Northern Virginia to get home. Two lanes, one in each direction, on a winding, narrow, wooded road in a “The Hills Have Eyes” looking area, critters everywhere, ominous glimpses of dilapidated ranch-style homes with pickups and Trump 2024 signage, and just when you thought it couldn’t get any spookier, a decapitated deer laying in a pool of its own blood that I had to avoid running over. Jordan Peele couldn’t have depicted a more uncomfortable drive.

I spoiled myself with a game treat and bought the game Tunic. It's a fine game. It is a cross between Zelda and Dark Souls. I had quite some fun but oh boy it is hard. Thankfully there is an accessibility option to make it easy. I used it only two times because my thumbs were already hurting enough and I didn't want to start a boss fight 100 times over. It is best to get into the game blind. I do admit that I looked up stuff at the end of the game because the puzzles to get the true ending are hard as heck and I have a life beyond that game.

@scribus It looks damn good but I'm not really in a mood for a brawler. Back in the day I played more Power Rangers The Movie on SNES because I didn't have Turtles in Time (only played as a rental at a friend's house).

@scribus Out of nowhere I remembered the ""Injun"" song from Peter Pan for the first time in twenty years and on a rewatch, oh man. Oh man

@thelastgherkin Well you inspired me to go back and take a look at it. I always wondered why people weren't more offended, but I still forgot half of how bad it is.

So has anyone ported Doom to the Virtual Boy, and do they make a good VB emulator for a VR headset yet? !vgp

I'm not big into LEGO but somehow I want a Star Wars Clone Wars Gunship set.
Thursday, 15-Jul-21 19:19:37 UTC from web-
@adiwan I hope they've revised the design since I tried to build Gherkins old one. That build is an unfun nightmare and produces the flimsiest model.
-
@ceruleanspark From what I've seen is big and sturdy. But I can only say that as an opinion without much insight and experience with big LEGO builds. I want it but I am aware that these sets are luxuriously expensive. I rather buy new Winter tyres for that kind of money.
-
@adiwan Gherkins was one of the first-gen models from the AOTC era, so it's entirely possible they've made the design slightly less likely to just explode on contact with a stiff breeze.

@scribus Are you sure it's not Daft Punk emailing you because they're bored in their retirement?

@scribus To answer the question I just got via email, the server is a basic digitalocean droplet. The $20 one. Depending on how much traffic you're expecting, you could easily run a couple of instances on there.
Wednesday, 07-Apr-21 22:48:40 UTC from web-
@ceruleanspark Groovy, thanks. I have a couple $5 ones for some blogs I wanna keep IP isolated, and was eyeballing a $10 for startup. Good to know.

So you know how they've got those nigh-pornographic art models with the poseable skeletons and all that jazz? Do they make them in non-human? Looking for a mouse or a rat... uh, also non-lewd. I don't need a sexy mouse. Not yet....
Saturday, 27-Mar-21 20:26:28 UTC from web-
@adiwan I dunno, lol. This is really probably just Perfectionism stepping on Productivity's toes. Mostly I just was looking for a reliable way to check if something I would write would be physically plausible. But I've already taken pages of notes on "The Secret of NIMH" and other cartoons and actual live animal footage, so I probably don't *need* anything at all.
-
@thelastgherkin Dude I've seen that before! And it is a good idea... um, in the context of trying to make an anatomical/biomechanical model. heh
-
@scribus I think it's cheaper to buy a real mouse and not bother trying to replicate the skeleton in order to see if a pose is even possible. Yeah... It'd bite back but still cheaper time-wise and financially. I don't think pet shops allow anybody willy-nilly to grab a mouse and contort it.

Playing Metal Gear Solid again... I bodyslammed Meryl while she was disguised because I recognized her walk cycle and I wanted to see what would happen. Nothing happens, she just sprints into her next cutscene to prevent you from impeding her any further. And then she still claims to have gotten the jump on you.

@scribus This is why I always enjoyed the mostly-unscripted nature of the later Fallouts & Elder Scrolls. New Vegas particularly introduces you to a major antagonist (or ally, if you choose to go that route...) fairly early on, while you’re on your way to a story quest, and you can just let him do his thing, or, if you have the firepower, you can just FrankerZin shoot him and he won’t appear again for the rest of the game. (And then you can shoot his replacement later, too!)

Damn. I bought another 3D printer.
Wednesday, 14-Oct-20 10:06:10 UTC from web-
@adiwan Have thought about it, actually.
-
@adiwan @scribus Not much of a point either, since we already have metal 3D printing in the shape of 4+ axis mills. You just put in a sufficiently big piece of metal and load the 3D model to the CNC software and let it work.
Mill of hot extrusion, metal printing will stay too dangerous and expensive for domestic use for at least a few decades I think. Most homes don't even have the space to fit the machinery or the wiring to run it. -
@nerthos Oops, *mill OR hot extrusion

Meanwhile, in Murrica: "The seven-day average of new cases has climbed above 56,000, a level not seen in the past 12 weeks, and is 14% higher week over week, according to John Hopkins data." https://www.cnn.com/2020/10/19/health/us-coronavirus-monday/index.html
Monday, 19-Oct-20 16:40:08 UTC from web-
@scribus Majority infection will be the eventual outcome, slower or quicker.
There are two ways to beat a virus: you either completely isolate every infected individual and anyone who is physically capable of contracting it for at least twice the lifespan of the virus, and I'm talking full lockdown, napalmed when opening the door; or you wait until almost the entire population has been infected and developed herd immunity, at which point new infections become very rare if the virus survives at all to mutate over following years.
Full lockdown wasn't done in time and in any case it is impossible considering the social paradigms of any western country, so the option that remains is the latter. Containment can only be reasonably used to slow spread to a rate to which the health system can handle it, but won't stop the spread, no matter how much a government insists on it. And it also vastly increases the number of deaths from existing conditions untreated due to lockdown.
