@applebloomsarepetalknives What? Three servers or a Minecraft server? :P
Tuesday, 26-Apr-11 03:56:31 UTC from web-
RBDN is 3 Weeks old! How do you like it so far? Is there something that needs to be implemented? Do feel that RP should be allowed etc? Suggestions always welcomed via publicly, PM, or email webmaster@rainbowdash.net
-
@administrator #ooc I still think RP should be allowed. It's been quite good for a three-week-old website.
-
@administrator #ooc It's only three weeks old?! lol holy moly.
-
@administrator #ooc I think RP should be allowed, but possibly should have it's own section to avoid confusion for newcomers.
-
@administrator The RP has gotten very far out of hand. I'm thinking of teaching myself javascript so I can write a Greasemonkey script to filter it out. Of course, that would require teaching myself javascript, so it could take a while. !c
-
@administrator Well I think the RPing is kind of annoying to be honest. I mean it is a social networking site, and there seems to be no social networking going on here, just RPing. That's my only complaint besides slowness, but I would never ask you to shell out more money for us. :)
-
@administrator RP should be allowed. It's one of the strengths of the way status.net works. I do think there should be some kind of rule set in stone to designate RP/MiscChat though. How that will be achieved is beyond me. (We've tried suggesting sticking to an RP group or a !chatter group, but both have huge flaws in that following the group implicitly means following everyone who uses it.)
-
@administrator Yeah, I'm with @frostflow here. It would be best to add a tab for RP talk only, but other than that; Congrats on three weeks!
-
@administrator Anywho, the community here is pretty nice, and the site works well with relatively solid uptime. If anything, I'd like a little more familiarity or understanding of mods/admins and what their designated roles are. But for the most part, the site is fine as it is. I also suggest having a permalink to the realtime update userscript somewhere on the site. It is very useful.
-
@retl @administrator Ideally, I'd like to see separate public timelines for RP and non-RP posts. This would have to be implemented server-side, though, which would be a pretty heavy undertaking. But probably easier than teaching myself javascript.
-
@administrator RP should be allowed, but I kindof wish there was a good way to filter it out. It DOES get overwhelming at time. There ARE ways to filter it out, of course, but i think most people would prefer a more "official" way to filter it out than just !chatter . Personally I'm pretty happy with how it is now.
-
@frostflow @atticus @manfredvonkarma #ooc I Agree compleatly.
-
@puzzlemint @administrator @nutterguy Having looked at the source for StatusNet, I can tell you that coding up separate timelines for RP and not-RP would be a pain and a half, and it'd be much more functional to either have two statusnet installs and use Ostatus to follow RP on the second install (no additional coding), or have a mandatory !rp tag for RP (which kinda breaks immersion for RPers, but allows them to easily see all of the RP in a birds-eye view by checking the group posts.)
-
@administrator I've wondered, on the RP topic, if it would be too much bother to make maybe an RP subdomain? I really have no experience with that sort of thing, so forgive me if I'm asking for the moon & stars. I really don't mind the RP, and I would never vote to take it away from the RPers, but it does get a little hard to evade at times. Finally, thank you for the site! Even if there may be tweaks that could theoretically be done, I'm happy with it as-is, and I appreciate your efforts.

@retl @administrator Separate StatusNet installs is something I considered as well. But I might take a stab at figuring out the separate timelines thing anyways, just for practice (which I sorely need, I haven't done any real web development since '06). This is the kind of thing I do for fun. Hell, if I HAD kept up on my web development all this time, I'd probably be trying to code up my own microblogging system from scratch right now.
-
@retl I've mentioned the issue with using !rp before. Yes all the rp could be found in the rp group, but that wouldn't take it off the front page. (unless new code was introduced)
-
@scribus :: Setting up a subdomain is very easy - one just has to wait for a couple of days for the DNS to update.
-
@scribus Not hard at all. However, for a *.Rainbowdash.net domain, I require another server. Any volunteers?
-
@administrator sorry about the Rping.....
-
@administrator Wait. Why do you need another server? What is this site hosted on, anyway? I use Dreamhost.
-
@epictwo Its not against the rules. Why are you apologising? D:
-
@retl Same. But the "A" Record is not editable, and I don't think I have access to the Apache settings. Currently for cal, purpletinker, and status, I'm using Cherokee on my computer.
-
@administrator Unfortunately, I doubt my jimmy-rigged home server could handle it.

@administrator So you're saying your domain name was registered through an outside site instead of through Dreamhost, and that Add New Domain / Sub Domain won't work, right? Or am I misunderstanding?
-
@applebloomsarepetalknives #ooc I wish I had the resources to hack into the NASA super computer, set up a 1 TB partition of Ubuntu Server, host it online, and forward the address to @administrator
-
@retl No, I don't have access to Apache to create the virtual server for the Sub. Hang on, let me look through stuff...
-
#ooc What I would like to see happen to this place is a predictability to the RPs. I like to do it myself, but it gets boring if it's happening all the time. If all us RPers could agree to pace ourselves, maybe alternating days where no rping takes place. It could be a relief to those who are not interested. A help to those who are but do not want to stay on all the time to find an rp they want to participate in. Finally it could help make this place 20% cooler because we were able to police our own behavior rather than @administrator having to do it.
-
#ooc @thequestrion Sounds like a plan. Only RPing every other day... Why didn't I think of that?
-
@administrator :: Why do you need another server for a subdomain? Can you not edit your DNS so that rainbowdash.net/XXX goes to XXX.rainbowdash.net ?
-
@administrator I'd be willing to provide a server. I have three servers that are basically doing nothing right now.
-
@applebloomsarepetalknives I'm renting them (they're linodes). Basically I had two for different projects I was doing (one in London and one in Newark), then I got a third one with more RAM to run a Minecraft server.
