My girlfriend's mum won't let her get a kitten and gets mad every time she mentions the idea of it even in conversation, how do I fix this? It's all my girlfriend wants since she lost her dog and misses having a pet to cuddle. MY mum is all for just getting her a kitten ANYWAY, but... :c

@scoot I think the girlfriends mom should change her mind. One of my friends guinea pig died and she adopted a hamster later and it helped her a great deal. I think getting her a kitten will help her a great deal towards moving on from a lost pet.

@doates We've tried everything to change her mind @trister We do know, it's that her mum is super selfish and always gets her way. We've never been able to convince her to do anything she just cries if anyone tries to reason with her. It's awful really. As for having it stay with us? We would LOVE to but unfortunately we have a hyper doggy and we don't know how well she'd fair with a kitten to contend with.

@scoot I hope you try @zennx idea and I really hope that the mother changes her mind. Give your girlfriend my condolences for losing the dog. Losing a pet is never easy.

@scoot she had a dog, right? so she's ok with pets in the house it seems... so I can imagine that she might warm up to the idea if it becomes reality. On the other hand I really don't want to say get a kitten anyway because if it doesn't work out it results in a lot of problems and a poor homeless animal. Speaking as someone with little experience of pets first hand I can't really consider the emotions at work here, at least not personally. But it might be best to leave it for a while. how recently did she lose her dog? It might help to let that die down first if it is still recent

@trister It was a recent thing but the interesting part was that the kitten idea was her mums then she suddenly turned against it.

@scoot was the kitten idea before or after the dog? it might be that she's just nervous about letting another animal into her life so soon. and she can't rationalise those feelings, so it comes across as selfish dismissal whenever the idea is brought up

@scoot well do you know why her mum won't let her get a kitten? if you know that it might be possible to find a solution. I would try to avoid just getting one anyway. if getting a kitten is really essential, and your mum is for it as she seems to be, you could get a kitten to stay with you, so that your girlfriend's mum can see what it's like without having it for sure

@scoot get a bunny, they are cute, they don't smell like cat pee, and love being huged and being fed random green things
-
@zennx Her mum has said no to a bunny for several years now.

@scoot DOES SHE HAVE NO HEART???
-
@zennx This is a possibility

@scoot you have no hope dude, sorry, the only way to convince her is to get some dirt on her and blackmail the apples out of her
-
@zennx what a wonderful view on the situation

@trister anyother option may cause harm to the pet, do you want a maltreated kitty?
-
@zennx interesting how your logic places a mistreated kitten higher in importance than a mistreated person, blackmailing can be pretty traumatic. I'm not saying any decisions should be made without thought, just that 'blackmail or bust' is a bit defeatist, even in a joking way

@trister altrough my life I learned one thing that I consider the absolute truth -> HUMANS ARE GARBAGE - and I deal with garbage as I see fit, and then place them in the propper recepient
-
@zennx humans? Garbage? You've either worked in retail for too long ot you haven't watched enough ponies lol
Wednesday, 14-Mar-12 00:16:08 UTC from web -
@zennx ah, I see, because valuing a person you've never met as garbage is perfectly fine because, as we all know; all people are the same. There aren't people who give to others on a daily basis or work hard to support their families or anything like that, yeah, that's a good system to have. Much rather we were all lions, who kill children who aren't their own to give their own offspring a greater chance of survival. That would be a much better way for the world to go.
Wednesday, 14-Mar-12 00:18:14 UTC from web-
@trister There are jewels in the garbage, but overall garbage is just garbage... as for the lion bit, yes, yes it would, expecially because if they are the offspring of the weak then they are also weak, and will weaken the entire pride, the group is only as strong as it's weakest member, and I refuse to let the weak plage my own
-
@zennx so you claim to have seen enough of humanity in your lifespan to be able to collectively judge everyone in it? and judge against what? humans are garbage compared to what alternative? it's impossible to know how things would have been if our species had never existed, so all we have to compare humanity to it itself, whether idealised or absent. and, of course, you don't realise that the lion who lost his pride might have been weak only due to increasing age, and may have had many strong cubs in his lifetime before age caught up with him, allowing a younger male to take his place.
Wednesday, 14-Mar-12 00:29:29 UTC from web-
@trister humans are garbage compared to the humans who aren't, and the children of an old lion are weaker and have smaller lifespan than the children of the same lion when it was younger... your move
-
@zennx wait. your first point it that people are garbage compared to the people aren't. So your real argument is that SOME people are garbage, which is a different thing entirely. You can't claim that humanity as a whole is bad because it contains bad elements. All throughout history there have been good people among bad who have done great things, and humanity as a whole has advanced, so if the bad didn't stop the good all the time back then why should it start to now? and I'm not arguing the genetics of lion cubs, merely providing it as an alternative communal behaviour, one which would be considered barbaric in our society, yet which you seem to be seeing as preferable.
Wednesday, 14-Mar-12 00:42:19 UTC from web-
@trister no my argument is that the VAST VAST majority of people are garbage, so vast the ones that are usual don't even register like P(x=human is not garbage) < 1x10^9001 and I do believe you have a wrong view of history, it's not about the bad stopping the good, THE GOOD NEVER STOPPED THE BAD FROM PROGRESSING, give me an example of an example where the good guys win, I dare you! Also I find it funny that you think there is such a thing as a Society, that would imply that people would follow rules that might be good for the masses yet bad for them personally, this doesn't happen, EVER, humans don't respect rules and laws because they are "Civil" they respect laws because they protect them from others
-
@zennx there is no way to say that the vast majority of people are 'anything' since, being individuals, and of course being so numerous, it's impossible to categorise people so simply. I'm not going to say 'humans are good' because there are bad examples too, but there are some examples of good, a lot more than people seem to think. I didn't say that the good stopped the bad, but that it doesn't always let the bad stop it. things such as racism and discrimination against homosexuals has decreased greatly in recent times, they haven't gone completely by any stretch, but compared to when being black meant being enslaved and being homosexual meant being criminal it is progress. If you propose that there is no society then what is there? anarchy? if you have a job or are in education you are conforming to systems, if you obey laws you are doing the same. that building you live in, was it built by one man for himself, or many for others? people do work within societies, just not all people
