  1. Man. My dad is CONVINCED that if you cut the internet while downloading a file, the corrupted file could damage your HDD. What the hell?!

    1. @minti i wish my dad would think like that then he wouldn't keep pulling the plug out XD

      1. @nexus He does it anyway to me. He expects me to finish everything I'm doing before he pulls the plug as to not damage my computer, or something. xD

            1. @minti Yep. For awhile my mom would turn off the power strip when she was done with the desktop to save power. The wifi router happened to be in the same strip, so I'd lose wifi every time she used the computer.

    3. @minti Let me tel you a little story... back in my old IRC days we had a xmas newb, one of those people that got a comp for xmas and started wandering the wilds of the web without a clue as to what was going on, he showed up in channel acting like a complete cherries, after a couple hours of this, through various means we had him convinced his comp had picked upa virus and the only way to remove it was to completely disconnect everything from his comp and set it out on his porch for a couple hours to freeze it out, then bring everything back inside, hook it all back up, and turn it on as quickly as possible and the thermal shock would make sure the virus was gone... we never saw him again.

        1. @minti We were pretty sure that, at the very least, his monitor exploded.

    4. @minti Theoretically if you're downloading an executable file and the end of a loop gets cut off in such a way that the file is otherwise intact and still executable, it could create an error that allows it to execute unallocated memory which may randomly contain an executable sequence that triggers some test code on your hard drive which then damages it. The odds of this happening are so small that the universe will probably reach maximum entropy before it ever does. It's even less likely to happen once you factor in that it can only happen if you actually execute the incomplete file and most systems will clearly mark incomplete downloads and either prompt you to resume them or just delete the file. And most executable files are distributed in binary and/or compressed form which won't execute at all if the end is cut off. In short you should tell him he's very wrong. Very very very wrong.

      1. @toksyuryel I am SO tempted to show him that, but he is die-hard convinced he's right that he's actually walking around the house mangoesed off that I've argued with him, so I don't wanna upset him more. xD I honestly do not know how he's a computer technician.

        1. @minti Now that's a truly frightening thought.

          1. @toksyuryel He's okay at it, but sometimes he has a total lack of knowledge in some areas. Like, a month ago I had an argument with him about how DNS servers did not assign IP addresses to local subnet computers..

          2. @toksyuryel @minti Computers on your local entranet* I have a feeling I use the word subnet wrong. xDD

            1. @minti It's a true statement in either case (also that would be "intranet". No idea what an "entranet" could be). DNS just says "this domain name is a funny phrase meaning this IP address".

              1. @toksyuryel Yeah I explained that DNS stood for "Domain Name Service" (Or server, forget.) and explained that it translated domain names to IP addresses and he completely refused to believe me. xD

                1. @minti Service. As much fun as it is to point and laugh at people who say "DNS Server" the joke's on you because it's not actually redundant.

              2. @toksyuryel Also yeah, intranet. I was confusing ethernet with internet/intranet. Dunno why.

      2. @toksyuryel Wow, I had to read that three times to even comprehend what you said. xD
