    1. @techdisk42 My mother is a disgrace to the family. She uses Chrome for her blog site, and still uses IE for _everything else_.

Monday, 21-May-12 20:06:52 UTC from web
      1. @redenchilada wat. how does she...

Monday, 21-May-12 20:07:59 UTC from web
        1. @techdisk42 Blogger doesn't work on IE any more apparently.

Monday, 21-May-12 20:09:24 UTC from web
          1. @redenchilada Good. the less support for IE, the better.

Monday, 21-May-12 20:10:26 UTC from web
      2. @redenchilada Install Chrome Frame if you can. If you can't get her to use a sane browser, at least make it render things like a sane browser. :P

Monday, 21-May-12 20:11:49 UTC from web
        1. @bitshift I'm going with my alternate plan; break IE to the point of unusability on her laptop, uninstall Chrome, install Firefox, and migrate her bookmarks so she has no reason to go back.

Monday, 21-May-12 20:12:51 UTC from web
          1. @redenchilada Also viable.

Monday, 21-May-12 20:13:17 UTC from web
          2. @redenchilada clarification: by "break to the point of unusability" for my mother I really just mean "disable image loading, javascript, flash, and addons". It's the same thing to her.

Monday, 21-May-12 20:13:31 UTC from web
            1. @redenchilada May want to write a script to do that while she's using it, to simulate an actual terrible crash :P

Monday, 21-May-12 20:15:17 UTC from Choqok
              1. @omni Too complicated.

Monday, 21-May-12 20:16:34 UTC from web
          3. @redenchilada When i converted my mom, i spent a bit with IE 8 and FF side by side and made FF look like IE (in terms of button placement) so she wouldnt have to relearn anything.

Monday, 21-May-12 20:14:41 UTC from web
            1. @techdisk42 I should probably do this too.

Monday, 21-May-12 20:16:11 UTC from web
              1. @redenchilada lol with IE 9, the UI became alot like chrome. i would say if she's using 9, dont switch anything. 8, move the buttons.

Monday, 21-May-12 20:17:49 UTC from web
                1. @techdisk42 I believe she's on 8 right now

Monday, 21-May-12 20:19:50 UTC from web
                  1. @redenchilada goulda. Just set em up side by side, and replace all the buttons.

Monday, 21-May-12 20:23:24 UTC from web
                    1. @techdisk42 Yes, this is probably a good idea.

Monday, 21-May-12 20:23:53 UTC from web
          4. @redenchilada You do realise that on Vista or higher you can just uninstall IE altogether right

Monday, 21-May-12 20:14:50 UTC from web
            1. @ceruleanspark You can? My mother's on 7. Thank you for this information.

Monday, 21-May-12 20:15:28 UTC from web
            2. @ceruleanspark You can uninstall it on XP too with a bit of work.

                1. @carcino Maaan, this thing is heavy. I already wrote like, three pages.

Monday, 21-May-12 22:18:04 UTC from web
                  1. @nerthos Hm?

Monday, 21-May-12 22:26:04 UTC from web
            3. @ceruleanspark Well, it's still on the hard disk. But unless his mother regularly digs through the "Enable/disable Windows features" dialog, the effect will be the same, yes. :)

Monday, 21-May-12 20:16:49 UTC from web
    2. @techdisk42 I installed firefox, transferred their bookmarks, then buried IE as much as I could. They converted.

Monday, 21-May-12 20:07:17 UTC from web
      1. @eaglehooves lol, i nagged my parents until they converted, and my mother said she noticed a huge speed diffrence.

Monday, 21-May-12 20:09:01 UTC from web
        1. @techdisk42 I still have to clean up an annoying amount of spyware even without IE. I don't know how they do it.

Monday, 21-May-12 20:10:29 UTC from web
          1. @eaglehooves *shrugpony* ive given my mother a good lesson on what not to click. and it seems she follows it.

Monday, 21-May-12 20:07:22 UTC from StatusNet iPhone
      1. @renovatedkitchen HOW? How is OCD relavant to IE of all things???

Monday, 21-May-12 20:08:30 UTC from web
        1. @techdisk42 because it comes with windows and isn't customizable.

            1. @techdisk42 lol. I am forced to use it because whenever I have more than 4 tabs,my HDD and CPU usage goes through the roof.

Monday, 21-May-12 20:14:58 UTC from StatusNet iPhone
              1. @renovatedkitchen how does that work... Like, with FF and chrome? How does IE work? the first thing i do on any computer i have control over is install firefox and default it.

                  1. @redenchilada Someone once started a rumor that, by default, IEvil would have www.getfirefox.com and mozilla.com blacklisted.

                2. @techdisk42 lol. I know. But like I said. OCD. IE is original default and it should stay like that. :P you can use ff on school computers though.

Monday, 21-May-12 20:19:00 UTC from StatusNet iPhone
                  1. @renovatedkitchen We use IE at school, it's a living nightmare...

Monday, 21-May-12 20:21:42 UTC from Choqok
                    1. @omni I want to petition my school to replace IE with Firefox. (I could possibly push for Chrome easier, since everyone installs it on the school computers anyway, but I have a vendetta against it so)

Monday, 21-May-12 20:23:02 UTC from web
                      1. @redenchilada My school has some sort of M$ agreement that lets them install XP on everything. I have a feeling this stops them from using FF...

Monday, 21-May-12 20:24:26 UTC from web
                      2. @redenchilada They'd roll out firefox if Mozilla actually gave any cherriess about corporate usage. There's STILL no corporate deployment or management tools for firefox. Unless I can set the proxies, cookie policy, trusted sites, etc from my desk, it's not getting rolled out.

Monday, 21-May-12 20:25:12 UTC from web
                        1. @ceruleanspark Pffff my school doesn't care about that either. They have a domain blacklist (a very poor one) and that's it.

Monday, 21-May-12 20:26:28 UTC from web
                        2. @ceruleanspark That is true and kind of sad, yes. Chrome is a way better choice for a company, just because of that.

Monday, 21-May-12 20:26:48 UTC from Choqok
                          1. @omni Does Chrome have a corporate deployment tool?

Monday, 21-May-12 20:27:05 UTC from web
                            1. @ceruleanspark I thought so, though I could be wrong. I know Firefox doesn't have one and I believe Opera doesn't either (but that's not really a great browser either, way too resource-heavy)

Monday, 21-May-12 20:28:05 UTC from Choqok
                            2. @ceruleanspark http://is.gd/Yqfq8u - It's not really perfect, but it's something...

Monday, 21-May-12 20:30:33 UTC from Choqok
                    2. @omni lol. I know it's not the best, but it really isn't that horrible as you guys make it out to be. For a simple browser, it's okay. And you can install FF on a school computer, just don't import anything, and after installing it, power the PC down by pulling the plug. Then start it up again. FF is officially permanent. ^_^

Monday, 21-May-12 20:23:23 UTC from StatusNet iPhone
                      1. @renovatedkitchen It really is that horrible. My IT teacher can install software on his account and uses Firefox, it runs perfectly no matter how many tabs or whatever. We, as students, have to use IE9 which will freeze when there are more than 2 flash objects on a page or if you have more than 3 tabs open. It's horror, really.

                            1. @omni steal an ethernet cable from the back of a desktop.

                  2. @renovatedkitchen NO. IE is HORRIBLE. My philosiphy is that Windows is a good OS, but only after you install replacements for most of the built in stuff, such as FF over IE, TeraCopy (http://codesector.com/teracopy) over the normal Copy, and DeskPins. (http://www.snapfiles.com/get/deskpins.html)

Monday, 21-May-12 20:22:11 UTC from web
                    1. @techdisk42 And Notepad2 over Notepad. (I still prefer Notepad++, or one of the Unix-y editors, for heavy stuff, but Notepad2, due to being lightweight, is a better replacement for the "quickly edit something" use case of Notepad, while still not being braindead.)

                      1. @bitshift I always use notepad++. Even for the small stuff.

                3. @techdisk42 When I worked IT, if someone came in with viruses more than three times, we hid IE and put adblock and web of trust on FF and Chrome. It worked better than it should have.

    5. @widget There's an incantation with the "X-UA-Compatible" meta-tag and/or HTTP header that will force it to be used where available, too. And I _think_ it can be installed without admin privileges these days, so I'm sorely tempted to display "please install Chrome Frame if this site is breaking on your system" messages to users of older IEs.
