                1. @savorysword I just throw some bugs and stuff I find in games on there. I don't care if they're deleted.

                2. @savorysword I only really use it if I'm linking to a specific song as a recommendation, but in terms of personal listening I'm very much an album oriented person and don't use youtube as a source for new music.

              2. @nerthos Yeah but it's where everyone goes so if you're a content producer that's pretty much the only option. The video that got me almost 30K views on YouTube got me a tenth as much as Newgrounds, and Newgrounds is one of the more popular alternatives.

                1. @mrmattimation Sucks for producers. Just boycott the place or start an alternative.

                  1. @nerthos Right, but if we start an alternative, even less people will go there. Do you see where I'm going with this?

                    1. @mrmattimation Yes, but things will get worse and worse by just standing there. So it's basically reduce viewership or just get slowly strangled to death.

                      1. @nerthos There are alternatives being started, but they're being started by bigshots and for the most part it's privatized. TomSka claimed he's starting a public video service called TurboPunch but I've yet to see anything come out of that. At the end of the day, as bad as YouTube is, we as content producers are forced to stick with it because our viewership would be cut in half at least if we tried to move somewhere else, and a lot of them rely on ad revenue to live.

                        1. @mrmattimation Well considering how much I hate ads since they're basically getting money in exchange for producing literally nothing tangible...

                          1. @nerthos We're still providing a service.

                              1. @nerthos I mean, Let's Players and iPhone unboxers can totally go to hell, but the ACTUAL content producers work tirelessly for hours on end to barely scrape minimum wage.

                                1. @mrmattimation The issue is, if you want to make a living generally you have to work in an area that pays, as opposed to an area you love.

                                    1. @loveydoe You're supposed to work a paying job until you can find solvency for whatever your personal project is. If you go for only personal project and can't pay the bills you can't complain.

                                    1. @mrmattimation Hey, I'd be slaying criminals or teaching philosophy if what I love were an option, but it isn't. If you don't like the system there are options, you can grab a machete, an axe and a hoe and go clear an area of forest, build a hut, start farming, and eventually start a town like my grandfather did decades ago, but if you value luxuries like electricity and tap water, working a regular job or barely scraping by is the price you have to pay.

Thursday, 10-Jul-14 04:45:51 UTC from web
                                        1. @loveydoe Sure, I could take a career on it and end up teaching, but the educational system is constricting. I was more talking about an ancient greek-style philosophy teaching.

                                                  1. @nerthos My guess is that he recorded this before the age of digital recording. After listening to many of his recordings, he becomes easier.

Thursday, 10-Jul-14 05:15:44 UTC from web
                                                  2. @nerthos His idea is that here in the West we are brought at birth into a place with a puritanical work ethic which only seems to reward us after we are too old to enjoy it. There is a fable about an ant and a grasshopper in which the ant works all day and survives but the grasshopper dies because he plays a fiddle instead of hoarding food. Some have rewritten the story, giving the grasshopper a job at the end in a different insect's house to play dinner music for a wage of food, thus leaning the moral in favor of "following your cutie mark". The ant is following his vocation by working all day, but that's not the vocation of the cricket.

                                      2. @nerthos You can slay criminals and teach philosophy, but you would have to deal with the consequences. In any case, I bet both of those jobs could turn a profit, hypothetically speaking.

                                        2. @caret7 You can also make a living off uploading cartoons to the internet but chances of getting rich with it are slim, that's why I went with that explanation.

Thursday, 10-Jul-14 05:07:17 UTC from web
                                          1. @nerthos "getting rich" isn't my intention and if anyone wants to get rich off of YouTube they're kidding themselves.

                                          2. @nerthos You are right, but the goal of "doing what you love" isn't necessarily to make money. It's more like the goal is the act itself, and the money is a bonus side-effect.
