@northernnarwhal it depends, this morning (and before bed) i was listening to progressive house because i wanted to get into that mood, as music effects me emotionally. so when i was ready to write i was already in the right mindset. inspiration and motivation are huge factors here....

@savorysword Usually a lot of what I do musically is incredibly spontaneous, like I'll get a basic idea and just jam on it, doing whatever feels natural.

@savorysword I listened to some hip hop when I woke up, moved to some new wave around lunch time, listened to a bit noise rock in the afternoon and have just started listening to some folk music.

@savorysword I think my biggest fear is that something I create will feel contrived, or that after I create it I'll feel a disconnection with it. I really strive to create things where I can look back on them and think "this is a part of me and I'm proud of it"

@northernnarwhal there is no way to predict that :/ unfortunately. you wont ALWAYS be in the same place when you come back on a track but you WILL remember how you felt during its creation. its still rewarding

@savorysword It comes and goes for me, often times I might lose focus of what I'm doing or why I'm doing it and I'll just stop.

@northernnarwhal That's a valid fear to have and a very good observation about the relationship between art and artists generally.

@northernnarwhal Yeah. I sometimes encounter that as well in my writing. I worry I might just be focusing on wish fulfillment when instead I want to make something significant and relevant to real life. Sometimes it takes a leap of faith that your goal will be reached. I've had people misinterpret what I've written and point out what appear to by contrivances, and I've had people praise what I've written saying it's well rooted in reality. Ultimately I just do my best and trust that it will leave a positive impact overall on my intended audience.

@pony I know exactly what you mean, often times when I'm creating something I take a lot of influence from how everything around me is affecting me emotionally. And whether or not other people will receive those emotions is entirely beyond me. I think one of the biggest things for me is that I have to remember why I'm creating something, and not that I'm simply creating something.

@northernnarwhal Totally. Having a reason strong enough to keep me from giving in to distraction or discouragement has been essential.

@pony Yeah, when I create something or express myself through writing or some other medium it's because I feel that inner drive to do so.
