    1. @greydragon412 It... _technically_ supports gif avatars, but given it runs avatars through scaling code to scale them down (even if it doesn't need to; the code is not clever on that point), it'd fall foul of the gd library's awful handling of indexed colour. And it'd lose all but the first frame, so you'd just have a blushing Grey Scale (possibly with an odd background; due to the aforementioned issues with indexed colour), rather than a blushing Grey Scale that slowly gets a wingapples.

      1. @bitshift Transparent gifs tend to get white and grey noise for a background. Like snow.

        1. @thelastgherkin Yeah. Either way, it doesn't handle them at all well enough for there to be any point in trying to use a GIF avatar. ( /cc @greydragon412 )

          1. @bitshift It'd be largely unnoticeable if all the backgrounds of the interfaces were white, but between profiles and refresh colours, who does that?

          2. @bitshift Unsurprisingly, I found all this out when I made a new avatar for Cerulean.

    2. @greydragon412 that looks pretty good

    4. @greydragon412 That's the spirit!

    5. @greydragon412 That would help, but it still doesn't work well when scaling anything that uses indexed colour (and like I said, even if you made it avatar sized, it would still pass it through that bit of code). Now, same picture, as a PNG (well, as long as you don't use PNG's support for indexed colour, but it's pretty difficult to do that accidentally), even with transparency, would work fine. And since it drops everything but the first frame of a GIF, you would still have everything the GIF would, except without the colour weirdness.

    6. @greydragon412 Yeah. You can't get around that at all; even if you used an animated gif, the animation wouldn't survive the scaling code (which is always run, remember).

    7. @greydragon412 So, given that and the colour weirdness, it just makes sense to only ever use PNG or JPEG for avatar uploads.

    8. @greydragon412 animated avatars are dumb anyways

    9. @greydragon412 I hate animated avatars. They try too hard to grab your attention and end up looking silly.

      1. @redenchilada I use adblock for blocking animated avatars more than I use it for anything else.

    11. @greydragon412 But everyone shoves browser ponies on their Tumblrs and it's annoying. One reason I haven't updated Firefox yet is because the way they add them only loads on newer browsers.
