  1. I'm not gonna claim I'm on any one side in this whole thing, but come on, burning down stores in your own community to protest police violence is kind of dumb and counterproductive, you have to admit that.

    1. @mrmattimation There is a lot of bull going on in the name of 'protest'

      1. @deziac Part of me wonders how they're going to pay for the repairs to the city once this all inevitably blows over. Unfortunately, a lot of innocent taxpayers will probably have to find it.

        1. @mrmattimation Indeed. However, white people were starting the fires, the guy on the stream said so and they have footage of a white guy starting one of the car ones.

          1. @deziac I'm not pointing fingers at any races because that's totally counterproductive and tbh would only justify the rioters' actions.

            1. @mrmattimation I don't really care at this point, I hate people in general haha.

    2. @mrmattimation Have you ever engaged in self destructive behaviour because you were angry? This is the same.

      1. @ceruleanspark I'm actually really, really good at restraining myself from self-harm, as much as I do think about it.

        1. @mrmattimation I don't really mean self harm, so much as I mean lashing out at the people around you, even if they themselves haven't done anything to earn your ire

          1. @ceruleanspark Yeah, I guess I've done that before. Doesn't make it any less stupid. And we all know how often I like to think of myself as stupid.

      2. @ceruleanspark When it starts involving looting, it is no longer anger release.

        1. @nerthos I think the internalized view is that it's restitution from an inherently unjust system.

          1. @ceruleanspark At that point, that's just being a rabid animal. And rabid animals are put down.

            1. @nerthos What else is there to do when your ruler has lost their right to rule? You've got to (try to) start a revolution somewhere.

              1. @ceruleanspark When your ruler has lost their right to rule you band under a leader and start an organized movement. Looting and destroying property is barbaric and justifies the bloodiest tyrany. Someone who sees their source of income burned, house destroyed, and kids terrified will gladly accept Sauron's help in ending it.

                1. @nerthos It's points at times like these when a movement either crystalises under an ascendant leader or burns themselves out to nothing. It's difficult for them to organize on account of the whole "Pre-emptive teargassing" strategy the police are working from (which is the whole point of course).

                  1. @ceruleanspark No clear head has yet surfaced though, in months of conflict, at least that I've heard of. Still, it has two paths from here: Either the rioting gets out of control and they get a second '94, or a second race revolution surfaces. Both should be interesting to see, from a safe distance, of course.

                    1. @nerthos I imagine it's probably going to just burn itself out, simply because the current rulers have enough power to ensure that leadership can't emerge. If a "new MLK" arose today, they'd have him under arrest on questionable charges within days of his first public appearance and the media would toe the line immediately.

                      1. @ceruleanspark That is because a figure like MLK is from a past era. A world with different rules and a bigger gap, a cause that could be more easily justified despite the brutality that could be born of it. Today doesn't need a speaker of acceptance and peace, but rather a charismatic tactician who can navigate the traps laid to stop the emergence of a leader whie rallying the people.

              2. @ceruleanspark You know, you're probably the person, of those who are still around, who I enjoy the most debating with. You usually have directly opposing views from mine, but have clear ideas on them and have enough of a head and education to make sound arguments.
