Listening to songs without the words is pretty interesting
Sunday, 11-Jan-15 22:33:55 UTC from web-
@mastertdi So like, instrumentals?
Sunday, 11-Jan-15 22:36:05 UTC from web-
@northernnarwhal Yeah that's what I referred to them as earlier
Sunday, 11-Jan-15 22:36:32 UTC from web-
@mastertdi That's usually what I go by
Sunday, 11-Jan-15 22:38:25 UTC from web-
@northernnarwhal This is literally the result of my pulling my headphone jack out a little so "instrumental" seems a bit of a stretch
Sunday, 11-Jan-15 22:39:10 UTC from web-
@mastertdi Oh, I thought you meant like the master recordings without the vocal stems.
Sunday, 11-Jan-15 22:39:55 UTC from web-
@northernnarwhal Nah this is the result of me thinking I broke my earphones
Sunday, 11-Jan-15 22:41:00 UTC from web-
@mastertdi I hate when that happens, or when you only get sound in one ear.
Sunday, 11-Jan-15 22:41:49 UTC from web-
@northernnarwhal Yeah. I really love alterations of songs though so this is a cool experience
Sunday, 11-Jan-15 22:42:22 UTC from web-
@mastertdi I do really love when an artist or group covers a song but manages to successfully do it in a totally different style.
Sunday, 11-Jan-15 22:47:30 UTC from web-
@northernnarwhal Whenever I really like a song I'll listen to all the live versions and covers I can. The Decemberists are just unreal on stage and it's one of the best things I've ever seen
Sunday, 11-Jan-15 22:48:59 UTC from web-
@mastertdi You've seen them live?
Sunday, 11-Jan-15 22:52:16 UTC from web-
@northernnarwhal No no, YouTube vids
Sunday, 11-Jan-15 22:54:57 UTC from web-
@mastertdi Ah, gotcha. I know they have a live album but I don't think I've listened to it. I know I have heard all their studio records though.
Sunday, 11-Jan-15 22:55:56 UTC from web-
@northernnarwhal I've heard like half the live album and I've watched their Moshcam show. Colin's just really good with the audience and it's reciprocated well
Sunday, 11-Jan-15 22:57:09 UTC from web-
@mastertdi Have you been to any concerts before?
Sunday, 11-Jan-15 22:57:44 UTC from web-
@northernnarwhal I saw Dolly Parton live in Florida years ago. And I've been to a comedy show with a musician opening act but I don't think that counts
Sunday, 11-Jan-15 22:58:39 UTC from web-
@mastertdi I guess it would count depending on who you ask. Better than nothing though, concerts are fun.
Sunday, 11-Jan-15 23:00:06 UTC from web-
@northernnarwhal I find moshing obnoxious as papayas but yeah I'm sure I could dig it if it was more of a mellow crowd. I was meant to go to one of those huge-ass rock clusterkiwi gigs a couple years ago, but that was arranged by stoner friends who literally forgot all about it and I was sort of too worried about being killed to be upset about not going.
Sunday, 11-Jan-15 23:01:52 UTC from web-
@mastertdi Honestly, as someone who's been to a lot of very small time metal and punk shows I can you honestly don't have to participate in moshing at all. There's generally a pit near the middle of the crowd and if you wanna mosh you go in. I have moshed a few times in the past and generally speaking most of the time people are actually really cool about it and will help you up if you fall down. But as I said before, it's totally optional, really. Most people just do it for the energy. I've actually been to small shows where I've made it to the stage and dived off too, that was pretty cool. The other thing you should know is that it's not uncommon at all to encounter copious amounts of weed at a rock show, and even if you're not into it the place will no doubt reek of it. But really, as long as your responsible about it you should be okay.

@northernnarwhal *I can say
Sunday, 11-Jan-15 23:29:07 UTC from web -
@northernnarwhal Well, I wasn't even particularly interested in any of the bands that would be there. In retrospect I dunno why I agreed to go along. None of my friends thought it would go well for me and they wouldn't have been wrong.
Sunday, 11-Jan-15 23:31:26 UTC from web-
@mastertdi I've been to some folk and pop shows where I've just hung around and listened too, I think context is important for these kinds of things. But really, if you like a group and wanna see them live just go and enjoy the show. The times I have moshed in the past it was because it was some small show and I didn't know the band and wanted to try it.
Sunday, 11-Jan-15 23:36:09 UTC from web-
@northernnarwhal Yeah I'd definitely go to a live show that actually interested me. But the closest county I know of that bands play at around here is Manchester and that's a hassle to get to. I've seen plenty of comedy shows at Cheltenham which isn't even an hour away though so maybe some would play there.
Sunday, 11-Jan-15 23:38:38 UTC from web-
@mastertdi uh, city even.
Sunday, 11-Jan-15 23:39:04 UTC from web -
@mastertdi Most of the time it's around an hour drive downtown to get to all the good venues in downtown Toronto. With me now it's just been really frustrating because pretty much all the shows I actually wanna go to are 19+.
Sunday, 11-Jan-15 23:40:03 UTC from web-
@northernnarwhal What a weird age restriction. Is that the drinking age there
Sunday, 11-Jan-15 23:40:49 UTC from web-
@mastertdi Yeah, it's the drinking age in Ontario.
Sunday, 11-Jan-15 23:41:21 UTC from web-
@northernnarwhal ah
Sunday, 11-Jan-15 23:41:39 UTC from web-
@mastertdi What's the drinking age there? If I recall it was 18, right?
Sunday, 11-Jan-15 23:43:25 UTC from web-
@northernnarwhal Yyyyyes? I think? Probably yes.
Sunday, 11-Jan-15 23:44:10 UTC from web-
@mastertdi I know in Scotland it was 18
Sunday, 11-Jan-15 23:46:09 UTC from web-
@northernnarwhal That's months
Sunday, 11-Jan-15 23:46:17 UTC from web-
@mastertdi No kidding, those guys love to drink

@northernnarwhal Most of the concerts I've been to let anyone in, but if you aren't 21 they put marks on your hands so that everyone knows you're inferior. Also so that people won't give you alcohol.
Sunday, 11-Jan-15 23:41:45 UTC from web-
@ollie I've been to a lot of shows where I just got a mark on my hand and they let me in, but for some reason a lot of these newer shows I've been hoping to go to are either at bars or they just serve alcohol openly or something else along those lines wherein if you can't drink legally they won't let you in. Kind of sucks.
Sunday, 11-Jan-15 23:43:09 UTC from web-
@northernnarwhal Some shows I've been to don't even ID people unless they look underage.
Sunday, 11-Jan-15 23:44:50 UTC from web-
@ollie My uncle in law is like 36 and still gets ID'd lmao
Sunday, 11-Jan-15 23:45:52 UTC from web -
@ollie Most of the shows I've been to have been pretty strict about ID so I didn't wanna risk it even if I can pull off looking of age.

@mastertdi Wait were people moshing at a Dolly Parton concert? Please say yes.
Sunday, 11-Jan-15 23:30:02 UTC from web-
@ollie Yes (but no).
Sunday, 11-Jan-15 23:30:31 UTC from web -
@ollie I would mosh at a Dolly Parton show
Sunday, 11-Jan-15 23:32:32 UTC from web-
@northernnarwhal Like that guy who was break dancing to Overture of 1812
Sunday, 11-Jan-15 23:33:50 UTC from web-
@ollie Exactly like that, really
