  1. in brazil the only way to go to the college is passing the college's exam, and the exam is the only thing that counts

    1. @mushi At least that means if you banana up high school you're not totally FrankerZed for life.

      1. @northernnarwhal yeah, the school, in general, is not good enough to prepare you to this exam. if you're going for a federal institution, you will need at least one semester in a preparatory course (or like 3 years, if you want to study medicine)

        1. @mushi Most colleges and universities here look at your marks in high school (some even look at your grade average which includes course completely unrelated to the program you're going into) so pretty much if you do bad in high school you're screwed for life if you want to get into a good post-secondary institution.

          1. @northernnarwhal THANK GOD FOR ART SCHOOL

Sunday, 01-Feb-15 05:49:18 UTC from web
            1. @mrmattimation The high school I'm currently going to is actually classified as an "arts school" because of its programs, but I don't know if I'll be going into any of the arts after high school.

              1. @northernnarwhal i can actually apply to go to a school like that for senior year.

Sunday, 01-Feb-15 05:53:57 UTC from web
                1. @mrmattimation I actually originally went for music but now I have education for visual art, drama, and literature too.

          2. @northernnarwhal @northernnarwhal here the exams for the colleges also contain a ton of stuff that you wont use in the college itself. Pretty much each university used to creat a big exam about everything you saw in the highschool and more and everyone takes it. But some colleges make you take one specific exam after that for a few courses

      2. @northernnarwhal but, yes, 3 of my years in the school were real bad and i'm glad that they dont matter at all

        1. @mushi My relationship with high school is very much a love/hate relationship.

Sunday, 01-Feb-15 05:53:00 UTC from web
          1. @northernnarwhal i went from one of the worst students of the school to one of the best of them, yet that wasnt nearly enough for that exam. That thing is still the worst experience of my life

            1. @mushi specially considering that "if you dotn pass i will put you in the airforce" thing my father did to me

            2. @mushi I'd say I'm one of the better students in my grade, but I'm not sure where I'm going in life.

              1. @northernnarwhal hm, for most of the time i wanted to study biology, but i decided for chemistry because it is a thing i can study without killing anything

Sunday, 01-Feb-15 05:57:19 UTC from web
                1. @mushi I had chemistry class last year, thought it was alright but didn't enjoy the workload so I swapped this year's chemistry to study politics. I do have biology this semester though, and admittedly I was disappointed when I found out there weren't any dissections in the senior program as I'm usually really good at those.

                  1. @northernnarwhal you dont have chem and biology during the whole highschool?

Sunday, 01-Feb-15 05:59:39 UTC from web
                    1. @mushi I had generalized compulsory science courses throughout freshman and sophomore years, then in junior and senior years I have options of specific elective science courses. I took chemistry and biology last year so I'm eligible to take either one of them in this year's level but only went with this year's biology as I was not really that interested in chemistry, plus I've heard the senior chemistry teacher is a hard as nails marker.

                      1. @northernnarwhal well, that is complicate, but sounds better, here we have chem, bio and phys every year in the highschool

Sunday, 01-Feb-15 06:06:15 UTC from web
                        1. @mushi Yeah, after you're sophomore year here you don't actually have to take any science courses at all.

                          1. @northernnarwhal heh, i ran out of science courses last year, so i started taking some humanities, it was a funny refreshing experience

Sunday, 01-Feb-15 06:10:19 UTC from web
                            1. @mushi This semester is pretty easy for me, I just have politics, biology, and english.

Sunday, 01-Feb-15 06:11:57 UTC from web
                              1. @northernnarwhal this semester the only science i had was introduction to molecular modeling, it was pretty much learning how to use gauss view. It was pretty easy

Sunday, 01-Feb-15 06:13:02 UTC from web

Sunday, 01-Feb-15 06:17:27 UTC from web
                                        1. @metaltao Nope. Wooden balls for atoms, wooden sticks for single bonds, and metal springs bent for double bonds. The black spheres are carbon, the yellow spheres are hydrogen, the red spheres are oxygen, and the blue sphere is nitrogen.

                                                1. @mrmattimation Last year I just did that model of and did a full written report for the molecule of dopamine.

                                  2. @northernnarwhal ooh, i never played with those

                                    1. @mushi They're pretty cool, especially when you get into larger molecules.

Sunday, 01-Feb-15 06:16:52 UTC from web
                                    2. @mushi I wish I had those! I would be making all kinds of Carbon chains! Maybe make a few Hydrates! Alloys would be weir dot make, for they don't necessarily always "Bond" with each other, like Brass.

Sunday, 01-Feb-15 06:17:01 UTC from web
                                      1. @metaltao those models are for localized covalent bounds, metalic bounds like you see in alloys cant be represented like that

Sunday, 01-Feb-15 06:18:12 UTC from web
                                        1. @mushi Darn... Ionic bonds are a bit weird anyways.

Sunday, 01-Feb-15 06:18:53 UTC from web
                                          1. @metaltao yeah, ionic bounds also cant be represented with those models. Not even the dopamine narwhal showed is much accurate since the models cant represent the delocalized pi bounds on the benzene ring

Sunday, 01-Feb-15 06:21:02 UTC from web
                                            1. @mushi Yeah... But, since we are talking about bonds, have you heard of Quantum Strangness?

Sunday, 01-Feb-15 06:21:47 UTC from web
                                              1. @metaltao hm, not that i remember the english name. what is that?

Sunday, 01-Feb-15 06:23:16 UTC from web
                                                1. @mushi OH! I am SO glad to be sharing this with you then! Ok, you know how the electron Cloud is shaped right? It is meant to represent where electrons are LIKELY to show up? well, in truth, it isn't entirely accurate itself, the electrons can show up as far away as the other side of the galaxy from the atom at any moment, it just become less and less likey as one moves away from the cloud. (It is an exponential equation, except it goes in reverse. Or inverse.) Einstein was afraid of this as well, as it put his theory of Relativity in Jeopardy. So, you could theoretically have a way to transmit information across large distances FASTER than light. It has an explanation I believe, but I forget what it is! EXCITING!

Sunday, 01-Feb-15 06:27:32 UTC from web
                                                  1. @metaltao You know what this means, right? TIME TRAVEL! (not actually, but let me have my moment)

Sunday, 01-Feb-15 06:29:28 UTC from web
