    1. @northernnarwhal I've been taught to say it like "sen"

      1. @tiffany You've been taught the correct pronunciation then.

        1. @northernnarwhal Even though I'm hopefully dropping Film Studies next year I hope I have free periods when my class has Film so I can just attend the class when I want without the exam stress

          1. @tiffany That's good, it's all the fun of Film Studies without the stress. I still really wish my school had a class like that, pretty much all of my knowledge of film has come from personal viewing and research. Admittedly I have taken a Writer's Craft class so I do have a bit of an education on strong writing, but stuff relating specifically to television and film I've learned on my own.

            1. @northernnarwhal I'm pretty sure that I could still take a Media/Film Studies course in University with a strong English Language grade, so if that's what I wanna do I can take it whether I drop F.S. now or not.

              1. @tiffany If I wasn't going into music then English as well as film would probably be my runner up choice. Maybe philosophy or art.

                1. @northernnarwhal My school Philosophy and Ethics but I dunno how popular it is. I know that Psychology harbours over 100 students, which is probably like just under half of the total number of students in my year.

                  1. @tiffany Psychology is pretty much always the most popular course of a lot of universities, it's sort of interesting but definitely don't take it as a major. I really enjoyed my Philosophy course last semester, we went over lots of Greek dialogues and also touched upon contemporary philosophers with many subtopics in metaphysics, existentialism, and ethics. If I could continue it this semester I totally would.

                    1. @northernnarwhal My English Language course is actually 50% social science sorta stuff. It's all about how we acquire language as young children and some of the theories we learn I think the Psyche class learn too. Also there's a bit on like feral children which is pretty neat.

                        1. @awl It's completely new territory for me, and the exam totally floored me. It certainly is interesting though.

                          1. @tiffany It's like studying the entire field in its core. I'd like to get actual material on it one day.

                                  1. @tiffany Eh it's sort of a requirement for language creation if you want it to be throurough.

                                          1. @tiffany It'd be nice to have someone around who has a passion in the same enveloping field as I, but that might not be it for you. How about film?

                                            1. @awl It'd be TV if anything, I think. Well, general media would be nice so I could dabble.

                                              1. @tiffany What's cool about the field I'm going into is with audio engineering even though I'm aiming on working in music I'll have the credentials to work in post-production for film and television too.

                                                  1. @tiffany Well one could make the argument that anything is less enjoyable with requirements that are counter-productive or plain stupid. This is part of why I have learned more and more efficiently outside of school than within, but in no way does that condone dropping out.

Thursday, 26-Mar-15 22:01:20 UTC from web
                                                      1. @tiffany Because they ask questions unrelated or make cause for un-needed field work, like, an in-depth analysis of something that's already well spelled out?

Thursday, 26-Mar-15 22:05:52 UTC from web
                                                        1. @awl Well the exam is as follows: 1) A general essay question that could be about money or celebrities or viewing medium; 2 and 3) Memorise every single detail about two films and regurgitate that knowledge in a way that isn't useful or reflective of your actual skill.

Thursday, 26-Mar-15 22:08:01 UTC from web
                                                          1. @tiffany Those question 1 topics are just some of many examples

                                                          2. @tiffany Film shouldn't really be about money or celebrities, that's more like industry. Seems really strange it would be anything more than an afterthought.

Thursday, 26-Mar-15 22:09:18 UTC from web
                                                            1. @awl Eh, question 1 isn't really the issue. Though that being said, I do wish the entire exam was made up of smaller, more practical questions about camera, sound, mise-en-scene, what have you

Thursday, 26-Mar-15 22:10:09 UTC from web
                                                              1. @tiffany The whole field-work thing is just designed for one to get bored by it really, as in 2 and 3. The testing should be more like a certification test; reward you for thinking on your feet, not punishing you for not remembering every single dumb little detail.

Thursday, 26-Mar-15 22:12:05 UTC from web

Thursday, 26-Mar-15 22:15:23 UTC from web

Thursday, 26-Mar-15 22:18:10 UTC from web

Thursday, 26-Mar-15 22:19:46 UTC from web

Thursday, 26-Mar-15 22:20:32 UTC from web
                                                                2. @awl You'd likely enjoy the philosophy of the university I signed up for. They basically complained about the traditional ones focusing on an all too scientific method of teaching, that ended up creating more researchers, and instead made an university with a more practical way of teaching/working so their engineers would be fit to work in the industry.

Thursday, 26-Mar-15 22:18:30 UTC from web
                                    2. @awl There should be an RDN conlang.

                                        1. @awl The Latin alphabet is used, like we have now, but each letter is assigned a syllable like in Japanese. The syllables willhave Slavic phonemes.

Thursday, 26-Mar-15 21:52:16 UTC from web
                                          1. @caret7 So sort of like Esperanto, sans the Latin influence and a syllabic take on the Latin script.

                                            1. @awl It's only like Esperanto in the sense that it's a conlang and uses the Latin alphabet. It's more like Babm: http://rainbowdash.net/url/820802

Thursday, 26-Mar-15 22:02:24 UTC from web
                                              1. @caret7 I don't know, I hear Esperanto and think Slavic phonemes mixed into a Latin-based root word. But yeah Babm from first glance seems more like as you said.

Thursday, 26-Mar-15 22:04:32 UTC from web
                                                1. @awl Here we go. So for the RDN conlang, how about this: 'a' is me. 'b' is thou. 's' is a plural marker placed after any noun. So, 'as' is us and 'bs' is y'all.

Thursday, 26-Mar-15 22:09:11 UTC from web
                                                  1. @caret7 There are in truth more than 26 syllables in English if we go by spoken word especially. Are we going into this with the idea of it being phonetic?

Thursday, 26-Mar-15 22:13:22 UTC from web
                                                    1. @awl Each letter represents a syllable, like in Chinese or Japanese. That'd limit the amount of syllables we can use, and it would be unusable for English. New words and grammar would have to be built, but of course it's just an idea :) . Example pronunciations might be "ar-duh" for as, and "hey-duh" for bs.

Thursday, 26-Mar-15 22:18:53 UTC from web
                                                      1. @caret7 Ah I see, so we weren't thinking a substitution for writing English, don't know why I was thinking that when you said Slavic phonemes anyways. If anything else write letters backwards so you can have 52 syllables.

Thursday, 26-Mar-15 22:20:24 UTC from web
                      2. @tiffany Oh yeah, when I did Psychology in Grade 11 we studied feral children and spent a lot of time going over the case of this girl named Genie. It was pretty interesting to read up about. My English classes have generally just been literature analysis and occasionally mechanics.

                        1. @northernnarwhal Yeah, we did Genie too. In sixth form English is separated into Language and Literature, so you can study either one or both.

                          1. @tiffany That sounds like fun. English for me is still just "read x, write a bunch of essays about x, rinse, repeat".

                              1. @tiffany Yeah, I mean I love analyzing literature and stories but sometimes it just gets kinda repetitive.
