  1. Maybe I'm just not paying enough attention but just by watching MGS5 it doesn't make much sense

    1. @redenchilada I haven't played MGS5 but I've played MGS through MGS4 and can confidently say the series collectively doesn't make much sense

      1. @northernnarwhal "You like cohesive story lines, don't you?"

        1. @mrmattimation I've still enjoyed all the MGS games I've played, just that if you're looking for a focused and followable A -> B storyline in a game you're going to be very disappointed and frustrated. Admittedly, for as convoluted and ridiculous as the MGS franchise can get, I can still certainly give it credit for being mostly the brainchild of Kojima. It's not often you see a sole creator be given so much artistic liberty with such an immensely budgeted franchise. The obvious passion and dedication he has for his confusing mess of an extended narrative is admirable, to say the least.

          1. @northernnarwhal Yeah, major respect to that guy. It always annoys me when you have somebody who creates a franchise - Matt Greoning, for example - and they show up on the first day, give you the characters and premise, and then NEVER touch it again for as long as it's still a profitable thing.

            1. @mrmattimation Yeah, and what's even worse is when all the credit of the IP's success goes to that creator and not the team of writers and artists that took it off the ground from an idea to a media sensation.

              1. @northernnarwhal When Sam Simon died, there were all these people going "THE SIMPSONS WILL NEVER BE THE SAME AGAIN", but he hadn't set foot in their office since 1993. The only reason his name was still on the producer list is because of a legal agreement he made with Fox.

      2. @northernnarwhal It doesn't help that I think I'm only seeing the middle of the game? But I don't wanna make Chee start over

        1. @redenchilada No, believe me, it doesn't make much sense playing it from the beginning either.

        2. @redenchilada Don't worry, it's like what Matt said. Context will probably make you more confused, if anything.

          1. @northernnarwhal Can someone explain to me why people like this

Monday, 14-Sep-15 23:32:50 UTC from web
            1. @redenchilada Well, obviously different people can and will engage with a piece of media for different reasons, though I suppose I could tell you why I specifically have found enjoyment with the MGS franchise and that'll hopefully shed some light on the situation for you. For one thing, while the actual narrative construction and plotting is shaky at best, the character writing and dialogue composition of the series has a fair bit of colour and personality that you rarely find in AAA titles, which is certainly refreshing (and no doubt reflective of Kojima's extended involvement in the project). Also, the series is tonally a sort of camp espionage story that (intended or not) has a lot of entertainment value in its absurdism, and while not fitting neatly into metrics I'd personally consider "good writing" it's undeniably creatively composed and has its own "voice" as a piece of media.

            2. @redenchilada The gameplay itself also just strikes a pretty great balance between action and stealth that usually pretty effectively manages to reconcile player engagement with gameplay pacing.
