                1. @northernnarwhal Yeah, I just felt like adding a bit of confusion for today. I am done for a while. Any ways, with the talk about the Thief games? I heard the new one Sucked in comparison.

                  1. @metaltao Oh, Quinn is playing Dishonoured so I was just noting how it felt more like a Thief game to me than the 2014 Thief game did. I don't think the new Thief game is a terrible game, but as a fan of the original trilogy it's pretty immensely disappointing.

                    1. @northernnarwhal Ah, yeah. I remember that. Yahtzee did a thing about it and he noted how different it felt and was in general.

                      1. @metaltao Yeah, I think a really big obstacle of rebooted media ends up being "how do we streamline this content for a modern audience while maintaining the charm of the source material" and it's a difficult line to walk. Because yeah, in some way lots of media end up becoming "products of their time" and won't necessarily translate well into a modern context, and in a lots of ways works that are "products of their time" have that context of age to help establish their creative identity. That seems to be a shortcoming of the 2014 Thief game, in that it lacks any sense of identity by trying to obfuscate a preexisting context of identity. It plays into standard genre conventions in a tame and idealized manner, essentially becoming an archetypal genre piece as a means of providing a seemingly modern contextual vehicle for the gameplay, but as a result the game as a work lost so much of its personality and charisma.

                        1. @northernnarwhal Yeah, it seems it changed things that need not to be changed. It was fine with the way it was, and people expected it to be like that. But, people seemed to forget what it was supposed to feel like and made it looks different and feel different as well.

                          1. @metaltao I mean, its possible to modernize a work while still maintaining its sense of identity and charm, I just don't think the 2014 Thief really convinced me of that.

                            1. @northernnarwhal I don't mean the Graphics argument, I feel like "Modernized" also comes with the baggage of changing story and not looks alone. (Though, Modernized also seems to feel like taking something that has a certain art-style and making it more "realistic" to fit with the modern Media)

Sunday, 27-Sep-15 01:58:26 UTC from web
                              1. @metaltao Oh yeah, I was talking almost exclusively about the writing and design of the game. That's what I meant about "modernizing", placing it a frame understandable by broad audiences of the time at its release. It's not an inherently wrong thing to do, if anything attempting to acknowledge and understand your audience can heighten your media, and aesthetically 2014 Thief fits in with the series alright (Victorian era magical steampunk with a tinge of gothic influence) but the game's graphics are sort of extraneous here and it's the little details that give it away. It's the character writing (or lack thereof), the need for archetypal frameworks as structural reminders instead of sharp self-critique, and oversimplified for the sake of lionizing the player level designs that set the new Thief apart from the early instalments as a "modernized without identity" work.

                                1. @northernnarwhal The lower portion of your message is kind of something I want to focus on. Modernizing to expand your audience tends to have a high rate of alienating it. It is a game that many people may not know about and as such, expect it to be different in terms of character for games such as this. Changing that you go away from such expectations and get a more critical response from the old and new alike. Most people when looking for a game tend to not look for the same archetypes everywhere they find in many other games. I feel like, people look for something new and when that changes to Aline with everything else, it kind of makes the art of it really bland. (I guess)

                                  1. @metaltao Yeah, for me the issue wasn't that something was changed but that nothing really filled the void. I thought that Kid Icarus: Uprising worked as a great series reboot because even though it changed series fundamentals (action-platformer to rail-shooter/third-person 3D action game) it maintained that sense of adventure and imaginative personality that the original (and its lesser known sequel) carried in spite of their differences. It knows that even though much wasn't conveyed through the text of the previous instalments, tonally they sat on a dividing point of clever humour and surrealism, and Uprising conveys this same atmosphere through its text, established in an endearing meta-rapport between its characters throughout the game that fit in without coming off as indulgent. http://i.imgur.com/Vuxtaed.jpg This is the kind of development process I feel Thief lacked, in that it largely ignored the context of the original games and then failed to establish its own.
