  1. I hope you guys are happy because I am being shunned by my family right now for thinking One Punch Man was "just okay"

    1. @northernnarwhal That'll teach you! How dare you have different taste.

      1. @nerthos They're bringing out the "but have you read the manga?!" line of questioning

Sunday, 27-Dec-15 15:58:00 UTC from MuSTArDroid
        1. @northernnarwhal The worst question honestly.

Sunday, 27-Dec-15 15:58:42 UTC from web
          1. @slimgrin It's pretty much someone saying a film was just okay and getting criticized for not reading the book it was based off of. An adaptation fails as an adaptation if it explicitly has to lean on the strength of its source material (not that One Punch Man does this, but it's a correlation fans make very often).

Sunday, 27-Dec-15 16:02:47 UTC from MuSTArDroid
            1. @northernnarwhal Indeed yeah. I mainly reply to people with "If I didn't like this version, why would I enjoy a different version?" It can be a pain to get people to accept you just don't like something, especially if it's popular.

              1. @slimgrin The frustrating thing is that I don't even explicitly dislike One Punch Man, I just thought it wasn't really great. But people can sometimes deal in extremes where if I don't like something as much as they do then I must hate it or something, when in actuality I just approach media with different priorities. People tend to get really defensive about the media they enjoy, it's a kinda scary about being unable to reconcile identity with engagement.

                1. @northernnarwhal I used to be bad with people not liking content as much as I do, but as I've gotten older it's become more of "not as keen on it as I am? Cool." I feel the same about One Punch Man; it's pretty neat but not the best thing I've ever seen, and one of my friends also gets really defensive about it. People can indeed be scary about this sort of thing. :s

                  1. @slimgrin i dont really know how people take One punch man seriously. I mean, it is nice, but it is pretty much a joke anime

                    1. @mushi Indeed, the whole thing is silly while having nice animation.

                      1. @slimgrin The animation was its strongest suit in my opinion, Studio Madhouse tend to be consistently great at making their shows look great

                        1. @northernnarwhal Just looking at other stuff they've done and realised a couple of things I really enjoyed were done by them. Their animation really is good stuff.

                          1. @slimgrin A ton of anime I really enjoy has been done by them: Texhnolyze, Dennou Coil, Boogiepop Phantom, Death Parade, the first season of Gunslinger Girl, plus all the major works of directors like Masaaki Yuasa, Satoshi Kon, Mamoru Hosoda. Madhouse are an anime titan.

Sunday, 27-Dec-15 17:04:36 UTC from MuSTArDroid
                            1. @northernnarwhal Yeah just discovered Death Parade and Summer Wars were done by them, they really are an anime titan.

Sunday, 27-Dec-15 17:08:18 UTC from web
                              1. @slimgrin i watched that summer wars, but never heard about this death parade one

Sunday, 27-Dec-15 17:09:33 UTC from web
                                1. @mushi Yoo Death Parade is pretty short but still great stuff and the ending.. oh boy that ending had me crying and not many shows do that to me these days.

Sunday, 27-Dec-15 17:11:28 UTC from web
                                  1. @slimgrin i think i could watch that someday

Sunday, 27-Dec-15 17:12:02 UTC from web
                                2. @mushi Death Parade was from last winter's season, it's a full show adaptation of a previously made short called Death Billiards. It's a pretty great drama about purgatory.

Sunday, 27-Dec-15 17:12:47 UTC from MuSTArDroid
                                  1. @northernnarwhal yeah, i dont know this death billiard either

Sunday, 27-Dec-15 17:13:21 UTC from web
                                    1. @mushi Death Billiards was just a one-off short so it wasn't well known before Death Parade

Sunday, 27-Dec-15 17:14:40 UTC from MuSTArDroid
                              2. @slimgrin I think my favourite by them is probably The Tatami Galaxy, but they've done a ton of stuff I've liked. Summer Wars was really well done too, Mamoru Hosoda is a great director. Have you seen Wolf Children?

Sunday, 27-Dec-15 17:11:34 UTC from MuSTArDroid
                                1. @northernnarwhal Oh God yes I've seen Wolf Children! Man what an amazing film that was, I absolutely loved it.

                                  1. @slimgrin I think I'm gonna show it to my mom next mother's day, it's a really sweet and charming film. I like heart-on-sleeve dramas a lot.

Sunday, 27-Dec-15 17:14:02 UTC from MuSTArDroid
                                    1. @northernnarwhal Yeah I think that sounds like a good plan. I really need to get around to watching more dramas like it.

                                      1. @slimgrin I'd recommend Kyousougiga. It's one of my favourite dramas but no one I know online or offline has seen it. It's got really sharp writing and looks absolutely gorgeous, I can't recommend it enough.

                                        1. @northernnarwhal Oh it looks nice! I'll certainly start watching that tonight then.

                      2. @slimgrin yeah, i mean, it was a funny show, but I dont think it is all that thing people make it seems like

                        1. @mushi Pretty much like undertale

                        2. @mushi I completely agree.

Sunday, 27-Dec-15 16:57:15 UTC from web
                  2. @slimgrin I mean, just look at these reactionaries online getting infuriated because cultural criticism is catching up to the gaming industry and people are just now finally starting to look at some games and say "okay these are fun and all but they're also pretty sexist". And a lot of people are just livid because they take a criticism on their hobby as a criticism on them. It's the same situation where people are unable to reconcile media and identity and get unabashedly defensive (except in the case I've mentioned it's much worse because so many female journalists have received myriads of death threats and worse for daring to look at video games in a wider context). People can get really scary with things they like.

Sunday, 27-Dec-15 16:31:09 UTC from MuSTArDroid
                    1. @northernnarwhal I don't think they really mind the criticism. I mean, some do of course, but at large, to me the issue seems to be a different thing. Most of those who defend the idea that people should not "criticize" their games will actually take a well argumented point of view and discuss it, or ignore criticism without any hostility. What they can't stand is the way that criticism is done. Think of each media as a small country, all loose vassals of law empire. Music and literature are really old. Movies and tv have their years. Game country is fairly new, way newer than the others. Not long ago it was barely a settlement, no one really cared what went on there. The people who founded it just did what they wanted, nobody complained, people that liked it went in and played the games, people who didn't like it just didn't get them at all. Now after a few years, game country got a bigger wealth than all the others combined and reached a huge market. Then everyone started caring.

Sunday, 27-Dec-15 18:31:33 UTC from web
                    2. @northernnarwhal Now many of the people who defend it so zealously remember back when nobody cared. You're in your little country, doing your thing, and then all these people who have nothing to do with you, either tourists or people who don't even go near your place start complaining that they don't like what you do. You don't force anyone to go in, in fact you encourage people who don't like it to stay away. Yet all these strangers show up demanding that you do things their way, even though they're just that, strangers. Or even worse, they complain to law empire about what you do, just because they don't agree. The people who fight for this freedom to do whatever they want feel like that. They had their own place and now everyone is attacking. Anyone would fight when an stranger tries to muscle their way into your home to tell you what you do. It's not the criticism that bothers them. It's the fact that strangers try to enforce their views instead of leaving them alone.

Sunday, 27-Dec-15 18:36:04 UTC from web
        2. @northernnarwhal You have to make the hard choice of reading the manga and not changing your opinion, thus being considered a person of bad taste; or not reading it and being considered a casual poser.

Sunday, 27-Dec-15 15:59:18 UTC from web
          1. @nerthos I will take the "casual poser" route because that sounds easier than going through the trouble of reading something I may only enjoy a little bit to prove a point

            1. @northernnarwhal Thou hast made thy choice, and must now live with it.

              1. @nerthos It's fine, it's neither the first nor last time people will be upset with me over my opinion on a piece of media. I'm used to it by now.

Sunday, 27-Dec-15 16:07:39 UTC from MuSTArDroid
                1. @northernnarwhal By glad people value your opinion! No-one cares what Crazy Old Uncle Gherkin thinks

                  1. @thelastgherkin It is a bit of a double-edged sword, I guess. On one hand I am thankful there are people who care about what I think about media, but on the other hand it's weird when people expect me to have particular opinions that validate theirs. It's a vicious circle!
