I really wanna play Dark Souls 3, it looks really good.

@narwhal I played a bit of it. It's alright. Don't really see what the big deal is.
-
@narwhal According to a friend it is good, better than 2 at least. I'm avoiding looking at it until whenever I'm up to actually playing it though.
-
@nerthos I've managed to avoid spoilers for the most part, though I hung out with a friend yesterday who has the game and we talked a bit about it. He's been saying the same thing- better than 2 for sure (although it's generally accepted that 2 is sort of stumble relative to the rest of From Software's recent output). Hidetaka Miyazaki's input and direction has been crucial to their success.
-
@narwhal I mostly haven't touched it because 1) my disk is too full of unfinished things and 2) I haven't finished 2, as I was at the memories part when I updated it for the dlc, and the miracles nerf forced me to completely change my playstyle when I was on soul level 160+, at a point where I can't just change my build.

@mrmattimation It's hard to really briefly describe the appeal, but I guess it's that the Souls games (and Bloodborne) function not only as a well crafted RPGs but create a distinct player experiences through their command of atmosphere, worldbuilding, pacing, and attention to detail. They're games I've enjoyed a lot these past few years.

@nerthos I just don't have anything I can play it on at the moment. I was gonna buy a PS4 earlier this month but I recently got in touch with a friend of mine who has one and is planning on selling his, so I may just end up buying his later for less.

@narwhal Ya know I would normally hype and be all... "OH MY GOSH BEST GAME EVAR!"
In all honesty, it is a labor of understanding all the faults of all the souls games, including Bloodbourne, and working on their strengths... To create a very cohesive, intuitive, rewarding experience. It's like they combined all the good things in all the souls games as far as gameplay, and enough lore to take you back, and bring you into a new experience every time. It's a souls game, it still has quirks, but this time it's just a solid, polished entry, and one amazing send off for the souls series.Narwhal likes this. -
@narwhal Makes sense. Still, after what happened with 2, I don't want to pay full price on it, so I'll likely only consider buying it when the final edition with DLC comes out.

@nerthos Good plan
-
@noirbatch Oh yeah even Dark Souls 1, which I consider to be kind of a high watermark in games that have been released these past few years, isn't without some glaringly obvious cracks and flaws (looking at you, Bed of Chaos!) but in the broader scope of the game's accomplishments blemishes like those dissipate relative to its rich, organically developed world. What makes the Souls games and Bloodbourne great aren't simply small, individual touchstones but achievements reflective of their grander philosophy of game design that places priority on the individuality and emotional investment of player experience.

@narwhal The weird thing about DS1 is that what bosses were hard were completely up to your playstyle. For example for me the bridge drake was the hardest base game boss, impossible at the level you get to it, and the capra demon was easy. For Cerulean it was the complete opposite, never dying to the drake, yet having trouble with the capra demon even in NG+
-
@narwhal Well said, I couldn't have said it any better. Like that's it!
-
@nerthos What's also interesting is that many bosses and encounters could be avoided or skipped entirely given the layout of the world, so not only would the difficulty of certain enemies and bosses adjust relative to your playstyle, but so would how you engage with them and the game's world.
-
@narwhal Happened to me in 2 when I went through that ruined place where ornstein was before going to the last giant
-
@noirbatch I do quite like discussions like these, thank you~~ http://rainbowdash.net/attachment/838083
-
@nerthos Interesting, I know for most people (myself included) The Last Giant was their first boss battle in 2.
-
@narwhal Heide tower was geographically closer and was more aesthetically pleasing to me so I went there first. Also enemies there were chivalric in how they fought, rather than having to go through ambushes at a low level like in forest of giants.
-
@nerthos Wouldn't you have to fight the Dragonrider before battling the Old Dragonslayer/Ornstein though?
-
@narwhal I don't remember, but I probably did.
-
@nerthos Yeah I haven't played DS2 since around the time it came out (which was over 2 years ago) whereas I've revisited DS1 and Demon's Souls more recently, so I have stronger recollections of those games.
