OK, the music in "Tara the Android" is unsettling because it's off somehow, but how is it off? I don't think it's atonal, and it isn't arrhythmic, right?

@scribus It's off for a few different reasons. You're right in that it isn't atonal, but it is a few semitones off key and (more importantly) it's monophonic. Whereas the human voice is still technically monophonic, there are still harmonic overtones and fundamental frequencies carried even in our speaking voice, but Tara's singing is much more singular in tone, so that increases its sense of inhumanity. It's also not arrhythmic, but there's no coherent rhythmic meter throughout her singing, so it sounds rhythmically jarring especially when juxtaposed against the backing music (which, to tie into what I was saying earlier, is harmonically dissonant relative to Tara). I think Tara the Android is meant to capture the uncanny valley effect, both in appearance and performance, so they're meant to look and sound like an imitation of a person while still being very clearly inhuman.

@narwhal So either part, focused on, is kind of in the fringes of OK, but together they don't work?

@scribus Yeah, I'd say so. Any facet of the composition wouldn't sound nearly as creepy independently, it's the sum of parts that makes Tara unsettling.

@narwhal I just tell myself that the fact I never managed to nail that theory stuff in 8 or 9 years of lessons makes me punk rock.

@scribus My theory's okay, I think. Competent enough to get by, but my advanced theory knowledge is very rough. Theory's not for everyone though, it's a very specific language with distinct rules and components, so there will certainly be people able to easily pick it up and vice versa.
