@tiffany Remember flaxxx
-
@nerthos He's Fla20 now
-
@tiffany I meant the time Gherkin made a flaxx copy account. Then again, ECH was mostly you, me, flaxx, gherkin and sometimes cerulean.
-
@nerthos The Kings
-
@tiffany Coffehouse Snakes rule
-
@nerthos I made what now?
-
@thelastgherkin Back in ECH when you made an account with a mirrored avatar of flaxx's and named it "flaxxx" and pretended to be the real one for lulz.
-
@nerthos I have literally no memory of that.
-
@thelastgherkin I do because for some reason I remember all these inconsequential things that made me laugh. I think I have some screenshot around but not sure where.
-
@nerthos I also have literally no memory of that.
-
@nerthos I do sorta remember that now. Wow, can't believe it's only been three hours, feels more like three years, at least.
-
@flaxx RDN remembers. How are you doing anyway?
-
@nerthos Pretty good! Just trying to figure out how to animate things along motion paths in Maya because I have no idea how Maya works. How about yourself?
-
@flaxx Doing fine. Got up just an hour ago and heating water for a mate cocido (it's like tea). Haven't heard anyone mention Maya in years, but I do remember it from early 2000s magazines talking about 3D rendering
-
@nerthos It's basically the industry standard for game development. Maya for 3D and Photoshop for 2D. So that's pretty gross. But it works, I suppose.
-
@flaxx Going for a career in videogame development then?
-
@nerthos One can dare dream. Aiming for doing 3d modeling but we'll see how well that goes.
-
@flaxx Well, everything is a door if you work on it. Practice, make a portfolio, and when you see some studio hiring just send them a link to your work. It's not uncommon to see small-to-medium size studios posting ads for hiring on social media, if you stick to the circles where that's relevant.
-
@nerthos Yup. Went to the Sweden Game Conference a month or so ago which was nice and hopefully I'll be able to contact someone there for some sort of internship in a year or two. If all else fails, my 3D buddies and I will just have to befriend some programmers and make early access crafting survival games with a microtransaction store. Gonna be beautiful.
-
@flaxx Just remember the golden rule about early access: disappear and erase your traces once you've made enough money and never finish.

@flaxx Jokes aside you can always work on modelling for any other bussiness until you get the job you want, as in a curriculum experience is experience regardless of where you do the job.
-
@nerthos Duh. Just gotta save up some money to make a fancy trailer and go find people on reddit to help greenlight it on Steam.
-
@flaxx Bonus points if you fund it through kickstarter or patreon.
-
@nerthos Yeah, best case scenario I have an internship before I even finish uni. Doubt that'll happen and if it doesn't, I'll find something else to do while I practice more. Just need a nice portfolio and to be able to work in a team and I'm golden. I think I have the latter down mostly kind of maybe.
-
@nerthos And a quick gofundme because our best programmer is stuck in Tibet with no internet and we need a few thousand bucks to get him back here so we can get started o- I mean finish the game.
-
@maiyannah @flaxx This. Forgot about it, but it's actually a really good job. Architects, surveyors, and other related professionals tend to hire people to do all the CAD and modelling since it's the most time intensive part of the job and by extension the bottleneck in getting more jobs a month and thus more money.
-
@flaxx If all else fails you can claim you got cancer while developing and that's why updates don't come out, and beg for more money.
-
@flaxx Well that's worth something. Having a team you can work with decently is half the way there.
-
@nerthos Not sure if I should be able to see some posts that I don't, but architectural stuff could work too. CAD is what got me into 3D modeling to begin with, though I quickly realized I wanted to do something more creative than putting holes for screws and stuff in machine parts. Also wanted to make games because games are pretty great. But yeah, once I'm done with uni I'll take what I can get. If that's not making games, fine, I'll just practice until I get good enough.
-
@nerthos Cancer saves the day yet again.
-
@nerthos They often say you need to have 2 out of 3 qualities. 1. Be professional (get stuff done before deadlines. 2. Be fun and easy to work with. 3. Be really bloody skilled in whatever it is you'll be doing. Pick two of those and you'll be fine.
-
@nerthos @flaxx As an aside, I really adore how I can be more productive than many of these e-beggars when I have a chronic terminal illness that was supposed to kill me 15 years ago and make a mere fraction of what they do. The power of that emotional appeal when you have anything resembling a platform is monumental. Emotional blackmail.
-
@flaxx Oh, yeah, maiya's account is on another instance. You won't see her on public unless you're subscribed, but you should be able to see all of it from context. I agree that CAD is really boring, but it's a decent enough job for making money and practice. You can show architectural models to a studio to apply for a scenario modelling position and work your way from there.
-
@nerthos Way I see it is if I have to have a boring job for like 5 years after I graduate and then get to do things I actually enjoy (I know game development isn't all sunshine and rainbows, but still), it sounds worth it to me.
-
@maiyannah It's the reason I'm absolutely insensitive most of the time. Emotional extortion is the current fad so I went to the other extreme. My father often gets upset because of it as I don't seem to care about extended family and the like.
-
@nerthos Compassion is a precious thing. I don't waste it on those whom haven't invested in me.
-
@flaxx The first few years are always annoying, but they're important for getting a degree of economical independence so you don't have to worry about what'll happen if you don't get work for a month or two and can be a bit more picky with jobs.
