        1. @renovatedkitchen I actually used to run a system on 448MB of RAM. That was pretty fun.

          1. @toksyuryel I want to hug you. Im sorry bro. Although Im sure Linux is better with low ram

                1. @renovatedkitchen A thing you wouldn't expect someone to be running on a system with such low specs. I ran it and it wasn't even slow :D

Wednesday, 18-Jul-12 04:16:08 UTC from web
                  1. @toksyuryel Thats awesome. Is E17 easy to use? Whats its purpose?

Wednesday, 18-Jul-12 04:20:43 UTC from web
                    1. @renovatedkitchen It's sort of a halfway point between a window manager and a desktop environment. It's not easy to install, being pre-alpha software and requiring a whole mess of libraries written specifically for it, but it is easy to use once installed. It was doing effects like you see in Aero long before that was ever dreamed up, and unlike that it can do them on very little hardware. Updates tend to break it though, due to its pre-alpha nature there's no guarantee the codebase is in a particularly sane state at any given time you might choose to get it.

Wednesday, 18-Jul-12 04:24:37 UTC from web
                      1. @toksyuryel Hasn't it been in pre-alpha for years at this point?

                          1. @toksyuryel Wow. So even longer in development than the fabled NetHack 3.4.4/3.5/4.0/whatever, then? :P

Wednesday, 18-Jul-12 04:31:52 UTC from web
                            1. @bitshift The most frustrating thing about nethack is that every time I check the bugs page it's *different*. They are still working on it and fixing bugs, and they're just teasing us with it by this point. "See all these bugs we've fixed? I bet you'd like us to just make a bugfix release with all of them wouldn't you? Ha, ha~"

Wednesday, 18-Jul-12 04:33:26 UTC from web
                              1. @toksyuryel Maybe they want to get it entirely bug-free before they next drop a new version? I could see that taking a heck of a long time, given the breadth of content in NetHack, and the massive potential for various parts of it to intersect in unexpected ways.

Wednesday, 18-Jul-12 04:35:48 UTC from web
                                1. @bitshift Perhaps, but by this point the community has moved on. Even RGRN has endorsed a fork as "NetHack 4" now.

                                  1. @toksyuryel It took me a while to parse that acronym, but... rec.games.roguelike.nethack? (I _think_ rec.games is the appropriate usenet categorization, but I'm not sure. Heck, I didn't even know there were that many usenet communities still alive after all this time.)

                        2. @bitshift The EFL is actually alpha since a couple years ago though, so there is something resembling movement towards a release.

              2. @toksyuryel E17 is one of the most impressive things I've ever seen. I remain convinced that there must be some kind of dark sorcery behind its ability to be so gorgeous on so few CPU cycles.

Wednesday, 18-Jul-12 04:16:29 UTC from web
                1. @bitshift Yeah, I wish I could still run it but it broke too often and I needed to spend less time fixing it and more time pretending to be productive. As for the dark sorcery behind it, it's simple really: the lead developer hates C++ as much as I do, and it is coded purely in C.

Wednesday, 18-Jul-12 04:18:15 UTC from web
          2. @toksyuryel 448 is actually still pretty roomy for a server if you know what you're doing (and don't need to serve multiple highly-demanding services, obviously). But for a desktop/personal system... yeah, that's probably not gonna cut it for long anymore.
