  1. Vista is my favorite Windows platform and I have no idea why it gets so much hate. Was I too much of a casual or something? http://ur1.ca/9u1yg

    1. @abigpony For me, UAC, the worst implementation of POLA I've seen to date (it was, luckily, somewhat toned down under Windows 7 to actually not bite you in the face every time you try to do something).

      1. @omni The hell are you even talking about?

          1. @omni That thing is hideous. Yet it's needed due to retarded users.

          2. @omni I still don't get the connection. That worked the same as every other OS.

            1. @abigpony Well, the idea is too same, but especially in Vista it was way oversensitive, causing the user (yes, me too) to end up giving admin permission to pretty much half the applications they run because otherwise they can't run properly.

              1. @omni Is there a point to this? You saying it's a bad OS because you have to click one more button?

                1. @abigpony I use Teracopy, so I had to do it every time I moved a file.

                  1. @eaglehooves Why'd you use teracop then?

Wednesday, 25-Jul-12 21:27:38 UTC from web
                    1. @abigpony Because Windows file copy kept corrupting stuff when I moved from network to local drives.

                      1. @eaglehooves Sounds like a personal problem. stop downloading bad files. Never heard of the problem before.

                        1. @abigpony If it works for you, more power to you.

                2. @abigpony No... You obviously don't know what POLA is. POLA means Principle Of Least Authority and basically means: only give things the permissions it needs, to protect against malicious software. In Windows Vista, however, the minimum you already needed admin powers for was so low, that most programs really needed it for relatively normal features. I know, because I wrote a program that only ran some other programs and I already ended up in that issue.

                  1. @omni Well only download trustworthy software. I see no problem and I had no problem.

            1. @redenchilada Disable it: No security. Enable it: Having to give pretty much every program permission -> Near-zero security and a lot of annoying messages.

              1. @omni Listen, dude, just because you didn't have any use for it doesn't automatically mean nobody who ever uses a computer has any use for it.

Wednesday, 25-Jul-12 21:21:59 UTC from web
                1. @redenchilada You're completely missing my point. I'm not saying the future per-se is useless, POLA is quite useful, I just think the implementation in Windows Vista was utterly terrible and caused it to be near-useless.

Wednesday, 25-Jul-12 21:31:43 UTC from web
                  1. @omni And then they fixed it in 7.

                    1. @redenchilada That's what I've been saying several times. But we're talking about "what made Windows Vista bad" and for me, that was UAC, above all other things. In Windows 7, however, it has been improved substantially enough to not be that bothersome and actually useful.

                      1. @omni I thought you were talking about "how Linux is obviously superior and Windows is the devil".

Wednesday, 25-Jul-12 21:35:42 UTC from web
                        1. @redenchilada I wasn't. POLA is a good thing and it's good Windows has implemented it. It was just a disaster in Vista but actually good in 7.

    2. @widget I honestly don't mind if a person prefers Linux, but I don't want to be screamed at for preferring Windows. I've met enough people who respond to "I have a problem with this thing" with "INSTALL LINUX IT WILL FIX ALL YOUR PROBLEMS" that I'm kind of apathetic toward the whole thing.
