              @drewdle Yeah. In fact when I started my computer earlier today my fan failed and I had (my parents) to clean the fan and everything else inside the computer. 1GB of ram isn't much to work with.

                    @miloth I'm surprised you can do anything with 1Gb of memory and Vista. Vista's memory management is like herding cockroaches. But I understand the position you're in too. If your machine is 4 years old, 4Gb is probably the max.

                      @drewdle Weird how you had to mention cockroaches. I used to eat on my computer desk and my crappy apartment attracts them and they were all over the computer and the desk! And what do you mean by the limit is 4gb?

                        @miloth You said you'd get 6 or 8, and I assumed you meant gigs of memory. Most computers have a physical limit to what they can address. Older machines usually the limit is 4Gb. More if it's a 64bit system.

                          @drewdle Actually isn't the practical limit 3.5 GB for a 32-bit OS? IIRC Windows does some stupid things that cuts it down somehow.

                            @starshine You might be right. I know that you have to subtract the video RAM from the 4Gb ceiling, so if you had say 4Gb of memory and a 512Mb graphics card, 3.5Gb would be the absolute max the system would see in 32 bit mode. Probably closer to 3.2Gb after you account for weird Windows things.

                            @miloth Actually, you'd be surprised. A lot of netbooks ship with 1Gb of memory and Windows 7 and they run okay. Because Win 7 uses less memory than Vista, you might find it a bit quicker.
