@scribus Leather or steel? The only complicated thing about what you guys do is the whole latex/foam weapons. Instead of that I use wooden swords and more protection.

@nerthos Leather, but it's better than nothing. I almost bought a pair with large steel rings attached, but I was concerned about accidentally hitting someone in the face with them. And, yeah, it's more sport than training, so differences abound. Previously, it was me and one buddy with shinai (bamboo swords) and no armor at all. Those were fun times. XD

@scribus I mostly use steel plates as protection, since they're somewhat easy to shape and offer lots of protection. You have to be careful not to hit someone with an armored arm, yeah, but it's worth it.

@nerthos I think a main concern here is safety, and then affordability. In some LARPS, metal offers better bonuses for armor, but ours is simplified to keep it easy and to avoid anyone buying their way to victory.

@hakupony No, it's a comedy sketch from a indie film series called Huba. Each film is a bunch of sketches basically and they are pretty funny if you are Finnish.

@scribus Yeah, there's that problem too. If you're wearing full plate you can pretty much take any blow from a practice weapon. The costs part is relative, if you want to buy plate armor it becomes prohibitively expensibe, but if you make it yourself, it's probably cheaper than leather.

@nerthos Possibly. I would think that leather could be pricier to get, materials-wise, but easier to work, where steel would be cheaper to find but need better gear to work. But I've never tried either, so what the hell do I know? XD

@scribus Which one is easier depends on your particular set of craft talents. I'd totally show up on a flarp wearing full black plate, with a black cloak on top of it, shield and **** sword. Whenever I go to your part of the world, I'll show you how to work steel.

@scribus Equipment-wise, you need a hammer, some pliers, that thing for pop rivets, something to cut metal sheets with, a file, and something to hammer things on, even a piece of train rail can work. (That is, for a set of armor for FLARP, not for real combat)

@scribus It wouldn't take me more than a day of work to make a chestpiece and bracers, so making it is not really a bother. But as I said, the problem is sending it, because the pieces are bulky and have a considerable weight.

@scribus If it's not spiky, there shouldn't be a problem. It's just rigid. I wouldn't wear spiky/sharp armour to a LARP, though, since it could end very bad in case of cheating or a really tight fight with someone who takes the stuff seriously.

@nerthos The cost actuall is really relative if you think about how much a decent tent costs and how much a simple plate arour costs. The proble with heavy armour is that it can get really hot in there and that you need quite some timme to get into them. In addition, if you take LARP a bit seriously, you need someone to fix the damage to your armou after battles, so there isn't really a buying your way to victory. The easiest way to suceed is to get some people for a formation, learn decent sneaking or find a Master Mage who can support you...

@hakupony Yup, there's the heat problem. It's not something you can wear on a 35ºC day without training and being in good shape. If you need to buy it, then it's probably not worth it, but if you can make it, it's worth a try.

@nerthos It's worth it because it also changes the way you feel and move. Clothing and armour has more benefits in LARP as just giving ou armour points, it helps greatly to get in your role (and to look like your character).

@hakupony I would love to try some real LARP, but I haven't found a good group yet. There are great skill and strenght differences in most of the people who could play with me, so it wouldn't be fair. And there's also the point that all the number stuff would be bothersome in a live action enviorment. Since blows wouldn't actually deal any damage, I would just keep on fighting until exhausted.

@nerthos This is why mot LARPs have rules. First, you have to play your wounds as well, second, there is only a certain amount of damage your character can take. I have the luxury that there are some great big events arount - I'm taling about thousands of players :)

@widget anecdotally, it was one of the words allowed through my schools wordfilter 'cause of Shakespeare and history. Of course, aside from this conversation and perhaps a discussion of the best early game greatsword class weapon in Dark Souls, it'll probably never come up in an "Innocent" context again.

@ceruleanspark On the other hand, the word filter is regex-based, so it should still be possible to match the word only when not followed by "sword". That'd be the best of both options if it actually is doable.
