@sandypony Yeah it's really irritating. It was introduced recently though, you missed the RDN that wasn't rated PG.

@greenenchilada What's irritating about it? It only blocks words that would've got your posts deleted before. (Yes, there were false positives, but most were caught very quickly, and since @widget merged my changes, there shouldn't even be any obscure ones left.)

@eaglehooves I do miss it. I don't really think anyone really abused the fact we didn't have a word filter, and most stuff that was really bad got deleted.

@bitshift Because it was okay and, surprisingly enough, actually funny once in a while. We actually had a guy leave because of it.

@greenenchilada Before, posts with the words would be deleted. Having the offending word filtered is a much better solution for everyone involved. I thought we put this discussion to rest ages ago.

@redenchilada Just because it was "settled" does not mean everyone automatically becomes okay with it.

@greenenchilada But it was already against the rules to use that language on here. Concern about false positives is justified, yes, but trying to say that it's bad because breaking said rule "could be funny once in a while" is an absurd thing to say.

@greenenchilada How about this. If you break the rule and swear: You're banned.

@greenenchilada As long as you have no problem with them coming out as four asterisks, yes. (Though if you were using them to swear at someone, I suspect that could technically fall under the harassment rule if the tone of the post was clearly hostile even with the swears blocked - but then the rule you were breaking would still be "don't harass people", not "don't swear".)

@greenenchilada That's exactly what it is. The rule hasn't changed: Swearing is against the rules and you will be diciplined if you break them.

@bitshift Actually, as far as I can tell it was added so we don't have to delete the accidental slip up that happens in normal conversation. If people are doing it on purpose (such as swearing just cause they feel they can ) they're in the wrong.

@greenenchilada Apparently not. I can't entirely see what the point of the filter is if such posts still technically break the rules, but @minti's the mod here, not me, so his word goes.

@minti Disciplined, not banned. Silencing would be a good way to react, not outright ban. After repetitive abuse then I would consider it.

@greenenchilada In case you didn't know, silencing and banning are exactly the same. :p

@greenenchilada Silencing is still a kind of ban, just not the kind that's permanent. (And these terms are kind of ambiguous. :S)

@greenenchilada A silence is a temp-ban, a permaban is a permanent one. Depending on who's using the word, "ban" on its own could mean either.

@greenenchilada Well in StatusNet's interface, Silencing "bans" you from posting. xD Banning and Silencing has always been the same for me, regardless of length. Permabanning on the other hand...

@minti Specifically, bringing it up-to-date, since the current repo's version is so out-of-date it's using shiny's default avatar instead of RDN's.

@greenenchilada Nup. You were saying silence is a ban with length, and a ban is a permenant one. I was saying silence and ban are exactly the same (one with a length), and a permaban is one that lasts forever. :p
