  1. Ok so my dad thinks that running a DNS server is the solution to having a dynamic IP and having to update the DNS A Name record every time we reboot the router. :/

    1. @minti Basically he's looking at hosting his website himself, but we have a dynamic IP. I told him so and he said to run our own DNS server. :/ Not sure if troll or not..

      1. @minti Just tell him it's against your ISP's policy (which it almost certainly is)

        1. @ceruleanspark It's actually not. :/

    2. @minti Why do you guys have to update DNS records when you reboot the router?

      1. @redenchilada New IP = domain no longer points to correct IP cause dynamic IPs suck?

        1. @minti Oh, for a domain name. I thought you were talking about something relating to actually getting internet access.

        2. @minti Also couldn't you set something up through dynDNS's service? I know my router is able to ping them my new IP every time I reboot it.

          1. @ceruleanspark Yep. But he specifically wants to use a domain he already owns.

            1. @minti Doesn't Dyndns actually have a premium option that lets you do that?

Thursday, 18-Oct-12 11:34:25 UTC from StatusNet Desktop
              1. @ceruleanspark The main point of doing this is he doesn't want to pay for website hosting.

                1. @minti Just put him on dreamhost and use the "THEFULL96" discount code so he only pays $35 for his first year.

                  1. @ceruleanspark Are you still looking for Derp's profile?

                  2. @ceruleanspark He'll find a way to fudge that up too. The main reason he's raging over this (and he is raging trust me.) is cause he couldn't pay for the 1&1 hosting fees and paypal tried to take it out of his empty bank account and he got hit with an insufficient funds charge of like 50$. xD

                    1. @minti I like that banks reaction to you having no money is to demand more money from you. It's the real life version of "Keyboard not found, press F1 to continue"

                      1. @ceruleanspark Yep, this is wht I'm glad I have an overdraft. I'm not hit by huge fees when I accidentally go over by 5 cents. (Although technically going over in itself is bad, but bleh._

                        1. @minti I tried to buy a 100 dollar thing on my visa and was only 50 dollars under my credit limit. PayPal kept trying to process the card so many times I literally had over $500 in INSF. And the bank said it's my fault and I have to pay it.

          2. @ceruleanspark @minti Which I'm not sure if DynDNS allows that xD
