I just found an ancient working laptop in a dumpster by the library.

@techdisk Give me a few minutes, I'm running some checks on it before I let it anywhere near my network, but so far the newest file on it I can find is dated in 2006.

@yodelerty That's why I grabbed it from the dumpster, but then I decided to see if it'd boot, I plugged in one of my old chargers and, hey presto, it booted right up.

@yodelerty Maybe they didn't want to mess with it and just got lazy. I know I got a Sony Vaio for free, just needed a new HDD.

@yodelerty Like I said, it hasn't been used since 2006, so either it was taking up needed space or someone stole it and then realized it was crap and tossed it.

@yodelerty True. But some people are way too lazy for their own good. I know I've put out a tote full of computer parts and casings out by the dumpster before, but that's because they either didn't work or were horribly outdated.

@colfax I don't get that. My Vaio was from 2005 and that was the best computer I'd ever had. Who know.

@xeleanorxrigbyx The only computer parts I ever put in the trash were gutted cases, and they went into the recycle bin.

@colfax We didn't have recycle. However, I put all of that out there and it was gone in about 5 minutes. So someone got something out of it at least.

@xeleanorxrigbyx I still have a stone age Dell here I frankensteined from the corpses of three dead ones in the junk bin at the shop I used to work it.

@xeleanorxrigbyx The keyboard is pretty iffy but it works ok for what it is, I'm thinking of making it into a digital picture frame.

@colfax That'd be cool. My next endeavor will be to get a PC that's worth something. I have an Acer laptop right now, and that's only a tiny bit better than the worthless Dell laptop I used to have.

@renovatedkitchen And I'm not buying a prebuilt and also not a laptop this time. I love laptops, but mine overheats when I watch Netflix or check my email.

@xeleanorxrigbyx sounds like my dell :p. Desktops are great for longetivity. Especially home built ones. Have you gotten a program for your lappy that controls your fan speed manually?

@xeleanorxrigbyx I have an old dell laptop and it works fine if you give it a few minutes after turning it on.

@renovatedkitchen I did. It turned out that the thermal paste had gone completely dry in it.

@xeleanorxrigbyx ouch :/ the fans on my dell are packed with dust. I cleaned them out once before but as I rarely use it, it's not worth it to take it apart again. To replace it, picked up a toughbook cf-30
