    Ubuntu can be dual booted with Windows, right?

      @zeldatra Yes. GRUB (the bootloader Ubuntu uses) supports Windows. The Microsoft bootloader doesn't support Linux, though. So, whatever you do, you need to install Windows FIRST because otherwise everything breaks. But yes, installing Ubuntu won't ruin your Windows installation (unless you install it on the partition Windows resides on, of course).

          @zeldatra There are two ways which you can't possible screw up. Either you install it from within Windows, or you put the CD in your disk tray. If you install it within Windows, it'll put it inside Windows somewhere without killing stuff. If you put the CD in your disk tray, just choose "Install Ubuntu next to Windows". Believe me, it can't go wrong.

        @omni I've figured out how to create a live USB for Ubuntu, but I'm having trouble figuring out how to actually install Ubuntu (or preferably Mint) to my USB so that I can have a portable fully fledged version of it to go.

          @pony If you're running from a Windows system, I would recommend this to create live USB sticks: http://www.linuxliveusb.com/. There's also something from within Linux, but I forgot the name.
