@redenchilada I ask for a bit of each area in a game. The only games that are excepted in the story area IMO are fighters and sport games because they're basically meant to be played with other people instead of paying attention to the backstory.

@nerthos I always considered the story an optional component outside of RPGs, though. If it has a dumb story there's always the skip cutscene button. I'd rather just play the game.

@nerthos Games aren't a medium of storytelling yet. They need to get out of the idea of separating the experience into gameplay and cutscenes and into integrating the two better before they can be called that.

@redenchilada But they mixed those two things a LONG time ago. Maybe you're playing the wrong kind of games. I've played a lot of games in which the story is told at the same time the action happens.

@nerthos I don't mean like that. In most games what you're doing in-game is still completely inconsequential to what happens in the story. Very few actually use the interactivity itself to tell a story. The best example I can think of is the companion cube level in the original Portal that makes you bond with the cube before throwing it away, but that concept still hasn't been fleshed out into a game yet. (Though I've heard good things about Heavy Rain in that department... I'd have to try it out myself to say for sure, though.)
