  1. I wonder if a person had a cybernetic heart and lungs that continued to pump and breath without brain activity whether their body might continue to live after they've died.

    1. @pony That's literally exactly what the "Is it acceptable to cut a persons life support" debate is about.

      1. @ceruleanspark It comes down to the definition of living I guess.

        1. @pony If they have brain functions then they're alive. If they don't, they're dead. The only grey area ought to be in the case of severe brain damage

          1. @ceruleanspark That sounds right.

              1. @ceruleanspark How odd. I was just thinking, what if my answer surprised somepony? I didn't think it would surprise anypony though honestly. x3 If it's because of my faith I understand. Most conservatives tend to prefer to err on the side of caution especially when it comes to human life. Maybe I just don't know all the details that other conservatives do, like whether brain activity can be revived after an extended period of time. I don't see any reason to keep a body alive after the mind is dead, and my church takes no stance on the matter as far as I know (and I know a great deal about stances in my church). Though keeping the body alive for donation purposes would be good in some cases I think.

                  1. @ceruleanspark My church does have a stance on abortion. Let's see if I can find it.

                    1. @pony Same with a lot of the arguments against genetic experimentation. It's "not OK" to create "life" (clumps of engineered cells) for whatever reason, even though every person in america kills more "life" than that every time they clean a toilet.

                      1. @ceruleanspark I think bonobos ought to be used to grow replacement organs for humans. Bad for bonobos but good for us. (not sure if I'm spelling bonobo correctly)

                        1. @pony How exactly is the slaughter of actually living animals preferable to culturing cells in a petri dish?

Wednesday, 23-Oct-13 11:21:45 UTC from StatusNet Desktop
                          1. @ceruleanspark We wouldn't need to necessarily kill the bonobo donors, but if culturing the cells is an easier option then great! Embryonic stem cell research is fine even, as long as it's not facilitated by an abortion that should not have happened according to that statement I posted.

                            1. @pony Removing organs from things that are alive typically causes them to cease being alive.

                              1. @ceruleanspark depends on the organ, but yeah. I'm putting value on the life of the bonobo equal to the value of life of a pig.

                                  1. @ceruleanspark All life is sacred, and hunting for sport, for example, is a practice condemned in my church. Some will still hunt, but if they use the meat of the animals they kill so it then may be justified. As for why it's okay to kill animals for food, the Bible promotes eating meat. Meat sustains life. Organ harvesting sustains life. Hence I've logicked that using animals for organs is alright.

                                2. @pony Okay look, until/unless we can produce ham from a bonobo it's not worth as much as a pig

                                  1. @redenchilada I'm kind of unappetized thinking about what bonobo meat might taste like honestly. A pig can save as many lives as a bonobo I suppose where nourishment is lacking.
