    • @adiwan The only thing I can think of that would not be bad ( like the word 'Lose' would imply ) when loose is a timing scedule.

Pretty much the opposite of a deadline.

So... I guess it is pretty much always negative unless for that one in a million time it is not ?

      • I'm extremely frustrated. I have to dumb down my VR training program a lot more than I already have. I'm told that people shouldn't be allowed to drop grabbed items. I mean WTF! They take out all the fun of flinging items around. Also all the dynamic things I've built in should be gone. "Only activate the items that are immediately needed at the moment of the procedure!".

        • @oracle In industrial maintenance, dropping items and tools can cause serious setbacks. My opinion is that a user SHOULD be able to drop items, and that the dropping of the items should create a natural penalty.

        • @adiwan I am interested in your work here because I have a lot of experience in writing technical training documentation. Mostly with an emphasis in SQF (Food safety and quality) procedures but also in the documentation of my own and my teams poorly poorly written code.

        • @oracle The main problem is that I'm not responsible for the storyboard of the training. I'm the one who has to convert the gibberish into code. What I get is a very linear script that tells the user what to do and when the action has been done the next instruction appears. I use a giant state machine (in my current one there are about 80 states) for that purpose. Every time an action or an instruction has ended the state machine advances. The storyboard has 3 "difficulty levels" in mind in which the first level the user get all the instructions and the interaction items are highlighted. The second difficulty level is the same but without the instructions, and the 3rd is with no highlighting. In every state only the currently needed items are interactable and nothing more. My current training has also a little quiz in the second level and a thing where the user has to order the steps on a whiteboard. It's on the level of a kindergartener.

      • To hobby solder with solder that has lead ( Pb ) in it. Or do I make it all about 15 degrees of hell hotter and go lead-less, try to learn to solder with what is essentially almost pure tin using flux that could pose equal if not greater health risks. Why are there no simple answers ?

        • @drinkingpony My tip is already crusty. It's a very old soldering iron (about 12 years?). It's already very abused. Last time I scraped off all the gunk and applied a layer of solder before turning it off. Whenever I buy a better soldering iron station then I'll take better care of the tip and buy some replacements.

        • @adiwan Get a nice soldering station with a dial on it to set the target temperature, I got an Aoyue for about 35 Euro. For some reason Amazon.de is more expensive ( 47 ). Strange, normally Amazon is cheaper, even for me, with shipping costs included.

Ahwell, most important thing required for when you want to learn how to solder well or when you want to make really nice SMD, THT, Stripboarding or otherwise prevent the nightmare that comes from cold-joints and burned-joints it has to be a thermostat.

Soldering with just a pen you directly stick into the wall outlet or even a soldering gun is doable, however as I found out, you are going to have such a better experience with that thermostat dial. It's like spreading butter on your toast with a longsword, I mean, sure, you could do it, but it is not the optimal tool.

        • @drinkingpony My cheapo soldering station has a "temperature" dial but that's more a suggestion. It works so far and I'm too lazy to get a better one. I haven't had a cold joint so far and for my imprecise hands it's good enough.

        • @adiwan [ mostly in a relatable way. ]

Now I know that is a feeling, and I could never tell you that you are wrong. But things like Gravity Falls and MLP feel more relatable to me than BB. Not in that I actually come into contact with magic on the daily ( I should fix that ) but I would save my sibling from vampires or get all exited when I get one of my friends involved with one of my hobbies to the point where I forego my normal silent and reserved demeanor ( That is a long way around to get to scratch my back, but I hope you get what I mean... Fluttershy and Tank, I am thinking about that thing ). The motivations seem to remain stable and similar enough where I am able to crawl in their mindset.

Meanwhile in BB, let us say that the characters are indeed deeper to the point where the other two pale in comparison. Then you run into the trouble of never ever being able to show us enough of their actual personalities to make enough connections for relatablility, and that takes me out.

      • I gave in and I got a Youtube Premium account. I don't care about the original series it offers but the lack of ads is a relief, especially when viewing on the smart tv and tablet, that I use a lot recently. The tablet (a 35€ Amazon Fire HD7) I use especially in the morning when making breakfast and brushing teeth. And then when falling asleep listening to a let's play. And then the TV as a second screen to my laptop. I also use the tablet to control the TV. The TV remote is a bit fiddly to use. Also I can add stuff to the queue while something already plays, quite convenient.

        • @adiwan Series ending on the choice of the writer always does feel way better than someone else going "You have X issues to end the series". Just look at "Black Panther & The Crew" also known as the BLM Marvel Comic. That ending came out of nowhere and it was not statisfying at all.

Then again it is rumored that the sales figures for the first issue were 287000, issue 3 only got 25000 copies and issue 4 only 17500 copies.

And at this point in time I wonder what is quicker, the Terminal Velocity of a comic book, or that comic book sales. You know, since I am a huge science nerd.

          ... I miss brainiac...

        • @drinkingpony I'm just sad that Ryan North did a fantastic job and I imagined that the series could reach 100 issues with no sign of slowing down. A huge drop of readers after a # is to be expected. Readers of the series previous run take that as a jump-off point and new readers just try it and decide not to buy anything further. In this case it was the latter.

      • I replaced my Z lead screw rods on my 3d printers and cleaned the old ones to the point they look almost like new. I'm tempted to send that back to the seller and get a refund. They got a little bit stuck at certain heights consistently so they caused "wobbles" along the Z axis. I'm printing right now something tall and the effect is almost not there anymore. The old rods will be probably used anyway when I try to make a smaller CNC router. For that purpose they are good enough, at least for tinkering.
