@heartbeat all romance needs to be sad, but not necessarily tragic. The anticipation of possible death and possible successful physical intimacy yield similar muscle reactions in the heart. And in romance, the main character not winning the hand is roughly the equivalent of seeing a character die, emotion wise. The only exception is if both potential partners come out of the failed attempt happy for some weird reason. But to the point again, in good romance stories both characters should feel like garbage or incomplete while they're not connecting to each other. With one exception, typically the role of the hand to be won is often oblivious and the author treats them like an object to be won. But I don't like those romances too often, since it's mostly in guy comedies.
