@omni To do the unthinkable and post in defense of the labels, they do serve a purpose by investing in bands and paying to bring them to an audience they might not otherwise reach, and are within their rights to expect a return on that investment. The place where the system has fallen apart is that the labels have managed to position themselves in such a way as to "trap" most bands into a cycle of dependence on that borrowed money. The way the system is now, an artist would have to be successful on the same magnitude as Queen or The Beatles to ever escape that cycle of debt.
