@pony The only way to be at the bottom of a meritocracy is to simply suck. It's even more unfair to force those who work hard to get up in the pyramid to work for both themselves and those who are useless and end at the bottom, than to just let them rot on their own lack of motivation. The system is made with one objective in mind: to let society filter itself. Anyone who cares about himself and/or society will ascend at least to the mid tiers. YOU decide where you are placed, not other person or the system. There's simply nothing more close to the meaning of fair and just than that.
