@clayinthecarpet Evangelion has two main, interwoven story arcs. Firstly, the story of the Angels. In universe, the galaxy was seeded with intelligent life by an unknown progenitor race. They sent out seed ships to all worlds, containing one of two possible evolutionary lines. The children of "Adam", who developed into the angels, and the Children of Lilith, who developed into humanity. Protocol was such that two seeds should never have arrived on one world, but in the event that this happened, one seed was supposed to use a device called the lance of Longinus to enter stasis. Earth, designated as an "Adam" type planet also, accidentally recieved a Lilith Type seed. Lilliths lance was destroyed, so Adam went into stasis with the lance. This was "First Impact". Second Impact took place when mankind discovered the body of Adam buried under the Arctic ice, and removed the lance, re-activating him.
