What's a good anime for when you're drunk

@thatoneatomicdoublejuggalobackbreaker Dragonball Z.

@thatoneatomicdoublejuggalobackbreaker You asked for one to watch when you're drunk. I answered. I ain't gonna give you good titles with real artistic values if you're gonna watch it while drunk. ;)

@clayinthecarpet Drunk marathoning NG:E was a life changing experience. For the worse, mind you, but still life changing.
-
@scribus I'll be honest with you...I've seen NG:E drunk AND sober and I still don't understand a !@%#ing thing that went on there. Granted only could get past the first 2 eps each time...I hear it "makes much less sense" from there...
Friday, 06-Dec-13 07:54:32 UTC from web-
@clayinthecarpet It does take a lot of "interpretation."
-
@scribus Which is to say, "artsy-fartsy bullpapayasting."
-
@scribus And I might even be fine with that if the fanbase for the show wasn't so !@#%ing DEAD-SET on defending everything about it with silly bullcrap statements.

@scribus Thank you so much for being STRAIGHT with me about that. Honestly, the only thing I EVER get out of anime fans is "The creator was in major depression and the show represents the horrible experiences he was going through at the time."................O-...kay.....So, As I was asking, WHAT is the STORY about? What is the show about? Nobody can ever answer me definitively. There's no moral, no purpose, only weird.
Friday, 06-Dec-13 07:59:01 UTC from web-
@clayinthecarpet After watching it several times, I think I can start to figure some of the themes & points, but yeah. It ain't straightforward at all. And, as with anything not straightforward, a lot of people just jump on to feel "enlightened." Or something.
-
@scribus That's the feeling I get, too. There's probably something of merit within it, but it isn't this huge boot-kissing, "golden god" praise that everyone gives it. Honestly I think some of the guy's newer works are FAR better than that.
Friday, 06-Dec-13 08:36:12 UTC from web-
@clayinthecarpet Do you, by chance, ever watch any David Lynch?
-
@scribus I have seen Eraserhead and it's still one of my favorite films to date. I also own The Elephant Man, but I can't bring myself to watch it because I hate knowing that I'm going to be heavily depressed when I experience some form of art.
Friday, 06-Dec-13 08:45:49 UTC from web-
@clayinthecarpet If you dig Lynch, I think you can get through NG:E.
-
@scribus It's the understanding of the angle and purpose that I need to move forward. If the artist is COMPLETELY inaccessible on purpose, I have a hard time (naturally) locating the influence for their stuff and relating to it on a level personal enough that it makes a difference in my life. Eraserhead, overall, is very accessible - possibly much moreso than any other Lynch work that I've read about or seen. Therefore, it was a great entry level for me because of how much he's freely discussed about it and how much the themes have been made more and more obvious over the years.
Friday, 06-Dec-13 08:58:34 UTC from web -
@scribus But with so many NG:E fans being so !@#%ing obnoxious and self-important and WRONG, I have *yet* to experience a thoughtful response until this evening. And that's considering I've been trying to watch this damn show for years.

@clayinthecarpet Another aspect that I've come to consider from sporadically watching some few anime - it seems that Japanese storytelling conventions differ from North American ones. I've heard a lot of people complain about Japanese stories that don't fit the established three-act format. But I don't 100% know what I'm getting at anymore. >_< lol
Friday, 06-Dec-13 09:11:39 UTC from web-
@scribus Ironically, Eva /does/ fit that format. Act 1) Shinji fights angels and cries. Act 2) Gendo does that thing with his hands, Shinji tries and fails to get laid with multiple women, and cries. Act 3) Human Instrumentality/Everybody dies, and Shinji stops crying, to thunderous applause.

@scribus Definitely a lot of difference in the storytelling, especially when it comes to horror. You should look up some Japanese ghost stories. They're...creepy..., but in their own unique ways according to the beliefs of the culture. It's actually quite interesting. Check out the anime "Ghost Hunt" for an excellent representation of some of these ideas. Great show.
Friday, 06-Dec-13 09:15:39 UTC from web-
@clayinthecarpet I've wandered in and out of traditional Japanese monsters and a few different more modern Japanese horror movies.
Friday, 06-Dec-13 09:20:33 UTC from web-
@scribus I'm not one for watching many movies, so I've only seen a couple of the more popular Japanese horror films. I think I saw...The Grudge, and Ichi the Killer, if that's considered horror. 'Loved them both, though they're kinda dated now.
Friday, 06-Dec-13 09:22:24 UTC from web-
@clayinthecarpet I would have put Ichi closer to "psychological thriller," myself. But the gore level sure can land it with other slasher flicks, no problemo.

@scribus The Transformers: Energon cartoon is split into three acts. Act 1) the villains achieve their objective of reactivating Unicron for the first 20 episodes. Act 2) the heroes deactivate Unicron, but then the villains reactivate him again for 19 episodes. Act 3) oh crap, we still have 13 episodes left and more toys to sell, they can all fight each other for some reason??

@clayinthecarpet Evangelion has two main, interwoven story arcs. Firstly, the story of the Angels. In universe, the galaxy was seeded with intelligent life by an unknown progenitor race. They sent out seed ships to all worlds, containing one of two possible evolutionary lines. The children of "Adam", who developed into the angels, and the Children of Lilith, who developed into humanity. Protocol was such that two seeds should never have arrived on one world, but in the event that this happened, one seed was supposed to use a device called the lance of Longinus to enter stasis. Earth, designated as an "Adam" type planet also, accidentally recieved a Lilith Type seed. Lilliths lance was destroyed, so Adam went into stasis with the lance. This was "First Impact". Second Impact took place when mankind discovered the body of Adam buried under the Arctic ice, and removed the lance, re-activating him. This killed about a third of the worlds population outright, and triggered the

@clayinthecarpet awakening of the "Angels" whose predetermined goal was to destroy Lillith, and return all Lillith based life on earth to primordial soup (Also called LCL in series) to use as a baseline for colonising the planet for Adam type life. Humanity, as a general rule, doesn't fancy that, so formed various initiatives to prevent the Angels from making contact with the body of Lillith. One such organisation was Gehirn, NERV's forerunner, employing most of the same people, who, using samples of DNA taken from Adam after second impact, created the Evangelion units. (Unit 01, Shinji's EVA is unique because it is cloned from Lillith instead, for reasons that will be revealed shortly). These Eva units are unique as earthbound weapons, as they can manifest, and counteract the Angels unique defensive barrier, the AT field, through which conventional weapons cannot penetrate (even nuclear weapons did little more than irritate most angels).

@ceruleanspark You are giving me an anime papayas right now. This makes sense. Now I want to finish the series.
Friday, 06-Dec-13 08:47:08 UTC from web -
@ceruleanspark Seriously though? That is the most thorough and understanding and LOGICAL thing anyone has ever told me about that series. Usually people just write it off (and indeed, even the Wiki page does) as "Well, the writer was depressed and it makes sense because I love it!"
Friday, 06-Dec-13 08:49:30 UTC from web-
@clayinthecarpet That's about as much as I can give you without literally transcribing the entire series, but yes, it's not by any means as incomprehensible as people make it out to be. The new movies are, but that's because they were written to play UP the "Nobody understands Evangelion" angle
Friday, 06-Dec-13 08:53:28 UTC from web-
@ceruleanspark *hugs you*...This is so helpful. I can't tell you how I've longed for this type of info. I WANT to like the show, but I just couldn't feel out the angle.

@clayinthecarpet However, activating the AT Field requires that an Eva unit be "Ensouled" and operated by a living pilot. The process of imparting a "Soul" to an Eva unit does not seem to be fixed. In the case of the show, Shinji and Asukas Evas were both inhabited by the souls of their respective mothers, allowing their children to "Synchronise" themselves with the Evas and pilot them. It's not determined whether or not the soul must be "connected" as Rei's Eva, unit 00, has no resident soul, and Kaworu, being Adam in human form, does not require one. Maris Eva is also unknown, and she's one of the only pilots who has operated multiple Evangelion units, including ones not specifically configured for her. Also, the double-entry system equipped Unit 13 is piloted by Shinji AND Kaworu together through the power of, presumably, their man-love. Earth was only seeded with 17 Angels, so once those are defeated, Lillith (and humanity) will no longer be under threat.

@ceruleanspark My intrigue is strong. I may restart at episode 3 tomorrow morning.

@clayinthecarpet The secondary plot thread involves Shinji's father, Gendo Ikari, Commander of NERV. His objective is to recover the soul of his wife, Yui, from Evangelion Unit 01. (She was subsumed during the ensoulment process, because Eva 01 is a Lillith clone, rather than an Adam one. Being the same matter, they just absorbed eachother). His medium for doing this, involves Rei, a partial clone of Lillith and Yui, and his son, Shinji. He intends to initiate Third impact (The destruction of humanity) and have Rei and Shinji subvert the process in such a way that during the unmaking of Humanity, he, fused with part of the body of Adam, through sheer force of will, can remake the world in his image. (With his wife in it) It's rather sweet, when you ignore all the genocide.
