@awlditzy Because the language is a direct derivation of that spoken in the historical Reino de Castilla, which ended up becoming the most prominent kingdom of Spain before it united, and thus the official language. It then extended globally when Spain became an empire, and since the conquerors and settlers mainly used Castillian it ended up being called simply Spanish by many.
