everybody i just found out that me making silly jokes about Donald Trump (something I would have been doing ANYWAY if Clinton had won) will RETROACTIVELY prevent Donald Trump from taking office, I am a mad man with power and I must be stopped.

@mushi in ye olden days Unix used to be used with time-sharing so there was more a chance to see other users online

@rarity Oh I'm aware. I believe he was the first to congratulate on the election. Shortly after releasing that statement they stated wishes to reopen dialogue with Poland. Thought the timing on that was funny.
-
@rarity Yeah thank god that's a thing. Otherwise Donald Trump might have won the election.

what is the difference between rm and rmdir if you are removing a folder
Thursday, 10-Nov-16 23:22:34 UTC from web-
@ceruleanspark alright, thanks
-
@ceruleanspark @mushi There's a pretty significant difference.
'rmdir' will only removea single _empty_ folder.
'rm' will never remove a directory, unless using '-r' (recursive) which will delete the entire tree using the given path regardless of folder emptiness. -
@mmn oh, thanks ^^

why would linux use the same comand to move a file and to rename it?
Thursday, 10-Nov-16 23:17:44 UTC from web-
@maiyannah Looks like the BSD mv command will use rename(2) in certain cases, which doesn't change the file's location as far as I can tell (both the source and target must be on the same filesystem): http://u.daggsy.com/px
GNU mv doesn't use rename(2). -
@takepapayaakenji This is the sane way to do it.
The DOS way is rarely the sane way to do anything. -
@maiyannah BSD is often the sane way to do things.

The thing I'm most pleased with is the fact that it's now OK to make fun of the president-elects skin colour, because it is something he *can* change and isn't an artifact of his race.

@nerthos Yes and no. There's positive corporate cultures where employees end up just as invested if not more, but corporate cultures in general seem to be a detriment to this kind of loyalty and performance since the people involved in steering those cultures are often incentivised for dehumanising or at the very least disregarding employees.
-
@maiyannah In here it's a problem on both sides, the employers who don't care about the employee past getting the job done, and the employee who doesn't care about the employer past getting the paycheck.
-
@nerthos And neither wants to change because of the other.

Besides, I have to be left wing. What self respecting right wing organisation is going to take a migrant descended homosexual atheist furry who runs an MLP fansite?

@nerthos Irrespective of anything Donald Trump or the Vote Leave whackjob party have actually said or done, many people who *support* said leaders/causes seem to be big fans. Notice how quickly their most vocal supporters take to suggesting jailing/killing dissenters?
-
@ceruleanspark How many of those are there though? I don't think there's many more of them than the other side has violent extremists, specially considering the riots and beatings the losing party has perpetrated. And there's also the fact that, while you being on the side that had been getting social victories lately, many people on the opposite side had been feeling genuinely silenced and discriminated against. As far as I've seen there's no real risk of anything nor any real fascism past internet nutjobs, and Trump seems intent on closing the ideological gap. I speak having lived an election that was identical to this one over here, and over the last year seen how none of the pre-election fearmongering came to pass, violence and fascism being carried out solely by the most fanatic and politically invested followers of the losing party. Plus as Hakui said yesterday, the average Trump voter didn't think "I want to disenfranchise minorities" when they voted, but rather (cont)
-
@ceruleanspark "I want a decent job to feed my family". You saw how colfax spent years without being able to land a decent job, and that wasn't a rare thing. And let's be honest, the most vocal Clinton supporters have been talking about "fixing" the issue by assassinating trump, and even at least one woman who voted for her was beaten for not wanting to take part in the protests/riots against Trump. I don't dismiss your concerns as irrational, but I do think it's not nearly as bad as many are making it seem. A whole lot of the most fascist sounding Trump supporters are just papayaposting right now to celebrate that they feel they have a voice again and no one with power will call them a bigot for it, much like the gay community did flamboyant rallies when they stopped being actively persecuted.
