  1. @tk More from that times about Laconica:

mcscx favorited something by lohang: @spaceman 1) I am not a programmer. When Laconica was launched I was already a free software user. I heard about Laconica during those epic Twitter downtimes in 2008. Lot of people were looking for alternatives. If I remember correctly, Laconica was first mentioned on Linux Outlaws podcast. They discussed the importance of having distributed and federated social network; and about avoiding single points of failures. Soon I became one of the early users of # ( # ) Laconica was later renamed as StatusNet. It then became GNUSocial as a result of the merging of StatusNet and Free Social projects.

  2. I do remember when # / # got a little attention, but that was never anything like current HN / Reddit driven buzz that certain projects get today. But, yes, if most GS sites were ad-supported and investor-backed, there'd be more attention in the YC circles.

  3. It is also thanks to Evan that !ostatus hade a platform in # to strive on, which turned into StatusNet which is today !GNUsocial and was the network which # could bootstrap off and to this day federates with.

  9. @lambadalambda This was also why # was such a central part of the network while it was part of our network. Federation is the central advantage and disadvantage of our sites, so we need to make sure that everyone knows about it.

TL;DR: Promote the OStatus federation over $SITE or even $SOFTWARE and we'll all benefit.

  14. @takemangoakenji I think it was a mistake in hindsight. But I expect it was done that way for two reasons:
    (1) Most people were on # at the time; and
    (2) It was more familiar to people who had used # before they tried #

I'd like it if a future version of GS always displayed expanded webbies ( user @ domain ) instead of shortened names.

  24. @bes @vinzv One thing that I think is a real benefit from the # is that GS users now generally understand # (IMO, hiding the "@servername" part in order to stick within Twitter's 140 character limit was a near-fatal mistake in the original SN.) In the old days, # users were not really aware of people using other federated instances. These days, almost the first thing you encounter is different instances with different looks, different character-lengths, different interfaces, and different rules.

On the other hand, many users were # to both networks. They left and never returned.
